No words AT ALL at 21 months

I see lots of threads with children who have at least some speech at around this age (there's one here with whole lists of words, I notice). But none of them seem to relate to my son, who says nothing at all at the age of 21 months.

He is, however, responsive to communication, points at things and runs to get objects (eg shoes if I say we're going out, his cup if I ask him if he's thirsty, etc). He just doesn't actually say ANYTHING. Not one word.

Please tell me I'm not the only one!

does he make sounds and noises? if so what sort?

garciasangria · 14/01/2009 20:57

hi, my dn is the same age, and hasn't said any words yet - she does babble (though not much beyond mama dada tbh)

Does your lo make any sounds?

alexpolismum · 14/01/2009 20:59

yes, he says "mmm" a lot, usually while he's pointing. Also he says bababababa but not in reference to anything in particular. That's about it.

Is he your first baby? My dd3 (23months)has great range of words but it is because she is dc no 4. Other 3 are a lot older than her and she has picked it up from them.
Wouldnt worry as they will all start coming in the next couple of months and then you will want him to be quiet

naswm · 14/01/2009 21:02

DS1 had sentances at 18 months
DS2 spoke first word at over 3 years (altho he did have some physical problems)

BUT - they both wont shut up 18 months later!

If you not concerned about his hearing, adn he is communicating with you, I woudlnt worry. They all get there in the end

noonki · 14/01/2009 21:07

My DS2 is 21 month old (I think born May 07)

a month ago I got a referral to a speech group via surestart as he only said mama and a couple of other words.

We hadn't really noticed til he hit the age that DS1 was DS2 was born so we could really notice the lack of words in comparision iyswim.

Anyway since we noticed we made a real effort on talking to him, repeating words, saying 'You say it' 'what's this..its an ...'

and then one day it just clicked. I ended up cancelling the group as I was no longer worried.

PS only spoke 2 or 3 words until she was 2.5 then came out in full sentences (she to this day hates making mistakes!)

I don't think it is a problem at that age, but if you have a surestart near maybe ask them for advice

noonki · 14/01/2009 21:07

that ps was meant to say MY SISTER !

alexpolismum · 14/01/2009 21:07

Yes, he is the first. I also have dd who is 6 months. He does communicate with his pointing and he obviously understands a lot, but no actual speech

thanks noonki. Unfortunately, I don't live in the uk, so no surestart.

I do repeat things to him and ask him "what's this?" and "Do you want X or Y?" but so far he's just been pointing at whatever it is he wants.

Perhaps he'll be like your sister.

rest assured it will come, my dd3 has had a few words but in the last week they have come tumbling out. He doesnt need to speak if you can understand his pointing. M dd needs to be heard over her brother and sisters

Bubbaloo · 14/01/2009 22:46

I also have a ds who is 21 months and only says 'gat' when he see's one of our cats.He doesn't say anything else.
He makes lots of noise though and understands everything,so I'm really not concerned at all.The hv was a little worried but after having 2 hearing tests, they've come back fine.
He was late in sitting, crawling and walking so I guess talking is just another thing he's going to do a little later than most.I also know of 3 other children who were closer to the age of 3 before they started talking so your ds certainly isn't the only one.

alexpolismum · 15/01/2009 09:27

Thanks Bubbaloo. It's reassuring to know we're not the only ones! My ds was also late crawling, perhaps it's all related.

Mind you, we have had a development. Today he was playing with his cars and he said "brum!"

hi there! don't want to alarm you and is probably all fine but worth bearing in mind... my first said very little til 20/21 months but now she is 4 has a fantastic vocabulary. my ds says very little but understands loads - he has had hearing test and requires gromits so it might be worth checking your little one out

ChasingSquirrels · 17/01/2009 22:46

I am pretty sure my ds2 didn't say anything at 21mo.
He barely spoke at 2y6m.
At 2y7m he had a number of words, but had only put 2 together 3 times. We went on holiday at that point and by the end of the 10 days he was talking.
He is 3 in a couple of weeks and while his pronunication needs to improve his vocab etc is as you would expect for a 3yo.

Wickedin · 11/03/2026 06:36

Hows your son doing now?! My son is 20 months and no words at all.
