5 1/2 month old - constantly waking at 4am. Teething/wet nappy/hungry?

Hi!
My 5 1/2 month old little boy is waking at 4am every night.
We have just put him in a routine of feeding at 7am, 11am, 2pm, 6pm & 10pm and sleeping at 9am-10 and 12-2, and then down at 7pm. He goes t sleep at all bed times really well, but stirs at 4am and doesn't let up until 6 when we finally give up and get him up.
Last night I checked his nappy and it was very wet, so changed it, but by the time I had changed it, he was so awake that didn't want to go back to sleep. the other nights, I have just thought it was teething.

Its strange that he wakes up at 4am every night. I'm lost, i'm so tired, and some days he's up every 2 hours...but that hasn't happend for 2 days...

Does anyone know what nappies are the most absorbant for this age group that would keep him from waking earlier? and does anyone know what I should do in terms of helping him to go back to sleep? We use a dummy, but that seems to be useless because it calms him down for 2-5 mins, and then it drops out and he's back to crying again.

HELPPPPPPPPPPPPP, we're so sick of the broken nights sleep...

Any help would be great...THANK YOU

same here,

but sometimes at 2, 3, 4 am,

have you tried these?

the nappies i find are the most absorbant

This is a tricky age as you are almost at the transition of introducing solids. He is probably hungry. This happened with both of my DDs.
I ended up feeding but as soon as I introduced solids it stopped. However both Dds went through another stage at 9 months where they woke for the day at 5am.This lasted for ages but eventually and thank goodness it got later.....6.30am!

I always found that if my DDs woke at 4 or 5am it was because they were cold.
Try adding a layer of clothing or use grobags.

Pampers Baby-dry are supposedly practically bomb proof.

I think they do get unsettled around this age - there's a big growth spurt around 6 months plus teething plus big developmental changes that must be making their brains active. no help at all am I??

fourlittlefeet · 09/01/2009 22:18

I think maybe growth spurt too, esp as you are coming up to weaning. Then again DD had feed around that time until near 11 months when I knocked it on the head! (the feed, not her )

Your little boy seems identicle to my little boy who is just turned 6 months.

The routine is exactly the same as are the feeds and he too gets up at about 4ish, he had slept through twice in the last few weeks so Im hoping that were getting there

To be honest, he isnt really a problem though, I give him a bottle at 4am though - Im not sure he really wants it (he only takes a couple of ounces) but after a bottle he goes back to sleep while 7ish.

Ive been told to give him boiled water instead, I tried it once and he screamed the house down (not like him at all), it but seems a bit cruel to me! So Ive resounded myself to the fact that it wont last forever, he will eventually grow out of waking at 4am and just thankful he only wakes up once in the night.

TBH - I think we get a little bit too over obsessed with trying to get our little ones to sleep through. That seems to be the only question other mothers ask - 'Is he sleeping through yet?' and then a disapproving look when I say no. 'Get him in his ownbedroom' 'Just let him cry himself back to sleep' 'Feed him boiled water' are the comments I get.

Try not to get too bogged down by it, I know its hard when you are tired but try to nap when he does - not easy if you have other children though. But it will pass, he will grow out of it and before you know it he'll be sleeping in a single bed all through the night and you'll be wondering what all the fuss was about.

Just to add, I really recommend C&G night time milk if you are ff. Really settles my ds, up until a month ago he got up times a night.

Good luck

Missed out the number - he used to get up 3 times a night

hello i had this problem with my little girl 4 2weeks over the hoilday period. try given a rush in a bottle or night milk if no sleetping and put anything like dummies and teething ring in freezer . after adding night mike at 10pm she take 9oz then sleep 9.30 ever with a wet nappie

thisweathersajoke · 10/01/2009 23:30

Hi,

my Ds is the same - he is 6mth next week. For the last 4-5 weeks he has been waking up throughthe night, going to sleep well at 7-8pm and then after about 11pm, generally grizzly (putting dummy back in etc), then waking at all times. I am trying not to get into the habot if putting him in the bed, or tkaing him into the spare bed with me - but think that he is cold and loves snuggling under.

He is weaning, and am generally accepting that this is 'difficult time'. :_(
