How much sleep does your 5 yo get?

My ds is 5.5 and sleeps 10 each night - rarely under or over. Do you think this is enough?

I didn't think it was a silly question, but my friend recently commented her 5 yo was asleep by 7 and woke at 7 .... 12 hours and she thought my son was in bed too late and awake too early. He falls asleep around 8 and is awake around 6'ish.

What do you think?? I know it's only 2 hours difference, but she thought he was 'sleep deprived'

Everyone is different.
My DD (nearly 6) does sleep 12hrs and is then reluctant to get out of bed (bit like DH really ) but DS (3) rarely does and is usually bright as a button when he gets up.
As long as YOU think your DS has enough sleep don't worry about the others.

Mine (4.11) would happily go to bed at 9 most nights, but then sleep till 8am... Have instituted a 7.30 bedroom door pulled to and only going in to tell him off this week, but he's not actually going to sleep... Just hoping that sensory deprivation for 12 hours will be enough

Weegle · 08/01/2009 11:29

what a daft thing to say... and you're meant to make him sleep more, how, exactly?! Different children need different amounts. You know your son, if he's fine and happy and you're not constantly having to wake him, he's probably getting enough!

morethanyoubargainfor · 08/01/2009 11:34

my ds sleeps 12-13 hours a night and i would say atleast 40% of the time i have to wake him in the morning. On occassions when he has a late night he can cope with about 9 hours, anything less than that he ususally falls asleep in the afternoon! he does love his sleep and always has done.

Each child is different, he has two friends that roughly sleep for about 6 hours a night and have the same amonut of energy etc as my DS.

everybody is differnet, we even notice a difference between My DH and myself. I need lots of sleep, my DH can survive on very little if he has to and he is never in bed before 1am!

francagoestohollywood · 08/01/2009 11:35

Different children need a different amount of sleep.
Dd (who is 4 and a half) has always needed 12 hrs.
Ds (6) has always needed less, 10-11. Actually he needs more sleep now, but when he was a toddler he didn't sleep for more than 9/10 hrs. So we put him to bed quite late, to avoid starting the day too early.

Well if he is waking up naturally (which I assume he is) then it sounds as though he is getting enough sleep. DD is 4.8 and in the Christmas holidays was sleeping 12.5 - 13 hours.

Now she is at school she is getting more like 11.5 hours and I think she is sleep deprived whereas your DS is not. Managed to get her in bed for 7 last night so she had 12 hours. DS is nearly 8 and he seems just fine on 11 hours - 8 - 7.

My 3 are 9, 7 and 5 and all sleep between 10 -12 hours a night, depending on how active / tired they are.

Seona1973 · 08/01/2009 12:57

dd (5) sleeps from 7.45/8pm till around 7am and has never done the 7pm-7am thing.

mummyofboys · 08/01/2009 20:57

Thank you all - he does wake naturally, so I guess he's getting his quota. Gotta go, 'cause the little luvvy's till not in bed - too much Wii i me thinks

my DTDs are just 5 and usually get 11-12 hours, over the hols it was nearer to 13 DT1 tends to want/need less than DT2 though

Lmccrean · 08/01/2009 21:51

My DD, from age 4 til now (just turned 6) usually sleeps 11pm ish - 7 / 7.30am, so roughly 8 hours. Very active child too!

Sometimes she will go through phases for a few days going to bed at 8 or 9 and still getting up at same time.

As long as your kid is happy I wouldnt worry.

BibiThree · 08/01/2009 22:33

DD1 is 4.3 and she has been sleeping 11-12 hours (7-7 or thereabouts) since she was 3. Before that is was 7-5:30, but pre-nursery wore her out. I do think all children are different and if your son isn't grouchy in the mornings or excessively tired in the evenings then 10 hours is fine ino.

yaba · 11/01/2009 23:05

my son is 5.5. cant fall asleep till 10pm. needs waking in the morning around 7am. but weekends wakes alone at 8am.
seems fine, alert and active. but i'm not happy. i need some time alone in the evening. tried everything. going on for about a year. any suggestions besides medication.
anyone have the same problem?

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 11/01/2009 23:06

I think at this age they have started to work out their own sleep patterns.
DS1 still sleeps 12 hours at night - last night he slept 13.5 hours.

However alot of his class mates now sleep 11- hours anight and function perfectly well.

Northumberlandlass · 12/01/2009 08:21

DS is 5yo - sleeps from 7.30 to 6 am (if I'm lucky). Very active ! This is the longest he has EVER slept.

xx

leothelioness · 12/01/2009 08:28

my ds nearly 5 sleeps for about 10-11 hours, sleeping at about 8.30 at night, depending on the day he has had but no more putting him to bed earlier just means he wakes up earlier. Different children need diffent amounts of sleep just like some adults need 7 hours others need 9.
