8 month old doesn't put much weight on legs and I'm worrying.

My 8 month old dd has been sitting up unsupported since before she was 5 months. But she has never got any further than this and she doesn't really bear much weight on her legs. She isn't showing any signs of crawling either. When I put her on her tummy she tends just to roll onto her back immediately. I tell myself that they are all different but I'm a bit worried about it. Should I be, or do you think she'll just develop in her own time and it's too early to be worrying?

Do you get a 9 month check with HV where you are?
If you do, ask them then.
My dd didn't weight bear, made no attempt to pull herself up, no crawling etc. then walked 6 steps 2 days after her 1st birthday!
I think it's too early to worry yet.

None of my three were even vaguely mobile till after their first birthdays. None crawled or rolled over, just bum-shuffled. Dd2 in particular wouldn't weightbear until about 18months -- if you held her up to walk, she'd just hold her legs out in front of her like a little plastic dolly. None of mine walked before 18 months (20 months for ds). All now normal, v sporty etc.

Age of walking is highly heritable apparently -- might be worth checking at what age you and your dh started walking.

Unless there are signs of generalised muscle weakness, I wouldn't worry -- it's probably just one of those things.

Thank you for reassurance. I just asked my dad and he remembers I walked on my first birthday, but he thinks I didn't really move much before that. So, you're right frogs.

My dd is 8mths on Sunday. She only started sitting up unaided a couple of weeks ago and rolls onto her back if put on her tummy. She doesn't weight bear for long either. I am not worried. I never walked until I was 15mths and never crawled. I have some friends whose children only bum shuffled and didn't do that until much after 8mths. I just think my dd is spending all her energy on chatting and eating (but like me!)

lol pudding - you may have a point there (about my dd I mean!). After posting yesterday, we had a night of gymnastics in the cot. I had to keep rescuing her and at one point she was on her tummy at the other end of the cot, so I think she's gearing up now. Thanks again.
