Hi - my DD is 3.5yrs and is beautiful and healthy. She knows she is tall and is proud of it!

I worry though as she is so tall - she is 4ft so clothes are a problem ranging from wearing 6-7 to 8-9 clothes sizes; and her shoes size is 13.5. I know it sounds silly but I worry constantly about it - like will I get a school uniform to fit her when she goes to school; and will she be bullied for her height?

I am beginning to think whether I should go to the doctor as she does not seem to be slowing down in her growth - however this year her growth has not been as dramatic.

Do you think I am worrying over nothing???

She does sound tall but only a little taller than my DDwho is nearly 4. I am not worried as dh is 6'8. You culd talk to your hv if your worried. Also when they start school they have a health check then.

i wouldn't worry tbh, she sounds healthy. is anyone in your or her dad's family tall? my ds has always been hugely tall for his age, he's only 16 months but already in age 2-3 clothes. he looked like he was about a year old when he was 5 months! i'm not worried and neither are the health visitors but my family (the men) are all very tall, my brither is 6'5, my dad is 6'2, my grandfather is 6'4 so i think it's inevitable he will be big too.

i don't think she'll be bullied, i hope not anyway!

That is very tall indeed.

I would go to the doctor and insist on a referral to a growth specialist - probably an endocrinologist, though I am not quite sure.

The range of heights in my ds's F2 (reception class) is astounding. One boy is well over four foot, another is the same height as my tiny 2yo dd!

fymandbean · 04/01/2009 11:26

everyone grows at different rates - I was the tallest in my class until my periods started at 10 then I stopped growing and ended up medium height...

lunavix · 04/01/2009 11:28

That's a good point. I was tallest in class until I was ten! Now 5'3 lol

I worry a bit too. My 19 month old is 3+ft tall at the last measurement. Always on the 99th centile or above for height. Nobody in our family is tall, in fact in my family I'm the tallest at 5' 4". She is also on the same centile for weight though so am not sure if that means it's less of a worry.

Thanks for advice - i hope there is nothing to worry about but for my own peace of mind will make an appointment with doctor in new year. dd has been there for various runofmill ailments in the last 6months so I am sure if they thought there was anything untoward doc would have said then.

My niece is 7 and is also very tall. She stands out in the line at school and looks as though she has escaped from the Junior School down the road. However, the other children don't tease her about it at all.

Really, not at all. Just encourage her to be proud. I do remember a very tall girl when I was at school who slouched terribly in an effort to diminish her size.

ELB1 · 08/01/2009 16:34

Encourage her to be proud of it - and don;t let her become a sloucher - it's such a shame to see beautiful tall girls slouching.
I was always tallest at school - 5ft 7in at 10yrs (and size 7 feet). At senior shcool, they did one of those all school long photos when I was in 1st year and they made me stand at the back with the 5th years as I looked so out of place. I got comments, but quite liked the attention. Then it all stopped - am still 5ft 7 now!
As for school clothes - be inventove. My mum cut down a small schoolgirl pinafore dress for my gym skirt as all the school standard ones were too short.
Good luck to her.

Lauriefairycake · 08/01/2009 16:35

I was the tallest in my primary school for 2 years and then didn't grow another inch.

I am now the staggering height of 5 foot Zero.

Katiestar · 08/01/2009 17:45

I think it is very likely nothing to worry about at all.But I would take her to your GP if only for your own peace of mind

naturalbaby · 08/01/2009 18:07

i'm 6foot tall so was always much taller than all the other kids. i remember not being alowed a free kids colouring set on an airplane once cause the air hostess refused to believe how old i was and i was heartbroken my little sister got one and not me!

anyway, i'm not sure when tall is too tall but if you are concerned i would get it checked out as most things are easier to deal with earlier rather than later.
