Teething after tooth has cut through gum

Do babies show teething symptoms after the tooth has cut through the gum? My 14 mth DS has just cut his first tooth (at long last!), which now 'stands proud' of his gum a little. However, he still has bright red cheeks, dribbling, spotty cheeks, grizzly.

I guess I thought that the painful bit was before it cut? Or am I totally wrong? Or could he be cutting a second tooth?

From a teething novice!
Thanks

If it is still moving down then I'd have thought so , or maybe others are.

Thanks Lizs - maybe I am being over-optimistic that another might be coming, but it may still be the first one causing him discomfort.
Thanks for posting.

Watch out for the nappy rash too and have a tube of super-strength ointment handy. Metanium does the trick for our two when their little bums look like a Japanese flag.

Take plenty of pictures of the toothy grin so you can show it at his wedding
