i know its not really anything to worry about because it shows he is learning etc etc but things are getting a little out of hand now!!
he is 16mths and for a few months he has been pouring his drinks onto the floor and getting down on his hands and knees and lapping it up!!! he also does it at snack times..puts his plate on the floor and munches his food just like our dog does!!
the other day dh even found him with his head in the dogs water bowl, lapping up water!! (we usually put her bowls out of reach during the day but dh forgot!!)
should i be discouraging him from doing this..and how?

Count yourself lucky he doesn't drink out of the toilet bowl like a lot of dogs.

Haha! My daughter used to crouch at the side of the road before we crossed and would cock her leg at every tree we passed. She also chose only to bark in response to any unknown adults who spoke to her for a few weeks!!
It didn't last tooo long!
Enjoy the humour while it lasts, and then remind him of it at regular intervals throughout his life!

My dd did this about a year ago she is almost 3 now ,it drove me mad as it went on for weeks .I think I posted about it on here .

The worst bit was when she licked you when you gave her a cuddle and ate her food from the floor ,although she only ever bit her dad once .

The best thing I can tell you is to not make an issue of it let him get on with it but don't encourage it iyswim.

He will soon hopefully move on to something else but be warned from time to time the doggy will reappear dd was getting her brother to play fetch with her a couple of weeks ago!

It shows imagination. Leave him be.

Lukawhosbringingmyrrh · 30/12/2008 10:32

I forgot the licking!!! Haha! Happy memories!!

my 16 month old does this too! he loves our dog and always follows him around and even gets in to his bed with him. he pours his drinks andlaps them up too, he often brings his head up and goes 'oof oof' like a dog's bark. i think it's quite cute really, i'm sure he knows he's not actually a dog right???!

Rollmops · 03/01/2009 10:57

As long as he doesn't lick his balls or sniff the dog's bum, don't worry.

We have twins who think they are a couple of chimps....... but with worse table manners

I used to know a little boy who thoght he was a landrover!

pointydog · 03/01/2009 11:20

Have you seen the film My Life As A Dog? Very good.

Your boy is young. I wouldn't worry.

NotBigJustBolshy · 03/01/2009 11:23

My dd (then aged 15 months) used to bark at the postman - and growl at people she didn't like the look of . She grew out of it quite quickly.
