Evening all; am due with DC2 in April and wondering what best to buy cot/bed-wise. DD1 is 13 months and couldn't go in a bed yet but just not really sure what to do. Any suggestions?

Mine went into a bed when she was about 15m. It's just a little low cotbed and I put a gate on her bedroom door to prevent too much getting in and out.
Could you pop dd1 into a bed with a safety side thing on if you are worried about her falling out? Would save you buying a new cot for the next one.. congratulations btw

co-sleep with baby until dd1 is old enough for bed?

or get a crib?

one of my friends moved her DS over to a bed when he was about 17 months as she was about to have another baby. from what I hear her ds has been fine with it.

I was thinking by the time dc2 has slept in with us (in carry cot) for a couple of months DD1 might be ok in some kind of bed.

Put DS into cot bed at 19 months; recommend stair gate on door. He is now 2& 5 months & in single bed.

DD was 18m. It was fine, better than her cot anyway - which she never slept in anyway.

preggersplayspop · 28/12/2008 21:55

I put DS in his cotbed at 16 mo - he never took to the cot (only spent one whole night in it). For a few months before that he had been starting the night on the cotbed mattress in our room (but inevitably ended up in our bed after a few hours) which I think got him used to the size of the bed.

He's only fallen out once - but I leave pillows at the side of the bed so when he did fall out he stayed asleep.

We are really careful to keep the stair gate closed in case he decides to get out of the bed (he's a frequent waker).

mimikakey - they'd be alright in a bed by then, honestly. there are bed rails/guards you can use, and stairgates. we moved our 2 y ear old into a bed recently and she is thrilled with her newfound freedom! (not such a great move for us....)

but dd1 was in a bed at about 13/14 months - she never slept in her cot anyways, and it made night feeds a lot easier (she could get out of her bed and tumble into ours without me having to get out of bed myself, was great!

put dd in a childrens extending bed from ikea 9bloody m arvellous!), v low in case dd fell out (has only done so twice, once we found asleep stood up next to bed!!!) diudn't botyher with bedguard as bed so low, just put a couple of pillows on floor to soften potential falls, dd was about 16m when we put her n and sghe was fine, tip: don't get cotbed size bedding / quilt as its a rip off, get single quilt but lay it over bed side ways so you can tuck quilt under mattress and sort of 'seal' dc in so if they roll around the quilt helps keep them in and keeps them warm as they won't be in a grobag, abnd def put a safetygate on bedroom so no ne goes wandering to drink out of the toilet while you're asleep!

I would get a cotbed for dc1 as they last until 4yrs by which time dc2 could have the cotbed once she is ready for a bigger cot/bed.

mytetherisending · 28/12/2008 22:13

dd1 was 18mths btw

lea1980 · 30/12/2008 10:10

ds is 16mths, im trying to put him down in a bed but he screams himself hoarse! dh isnt happy about it so he keeps putting the cot side back on. im expecting dc2 in august and was hoping to have ds settled by then. i trhink ds has become used to the cot side, thing is though we were on holiday when ds was 13mths and he slept soundly in a bed..cant understand it!! should i invest in a fold away cot side?!

Prettyfull · 30/12/2008 12:20

Dd was in her cotbed from 14months, she was never a good sleeper so i thought id try it early in the hope it might change her sleeping pattern lol,..it didnt lol. But either way, she was fine with the bed guard up and a few pillows on the floor just incase :D
