11mo ds hitting his head - should we worry?

ds is nearly 11mo, and often repeatedly hits his head (quite hard). have assumed he's not hurting himself as it doesn't make him cry, but he will cry if we try and stop him doing it. it's been going on a few months now and is getting a little disturbing. should we worry?

I would seek professional input.

Try not to make a thing of it, totally ignore it. A lot of children head bang. Talk to your health visitor for advice, but don't worry.

not unusual. may be worth getting him doing more "musical" or singing stuff, as it can be the rhythmic (?sp) aspect that's appealing.

thanks. I'll mention it to a health visitor, but it's hard to ignore - currently we try distraction. will also try singing/dancing more, as he enjoys both of these.

hi there, if you do a search on mumsnet you will see a lot of other posts on this. My ds did the same for months. We took him out his cot in the end and has stopped it now he is in a toddler bed. He is 22 months now.

hi my ds 10months sits beside door and bangs his head of it pushingdoor open and shut he never cries think its just a baby thing as dd 2.5 did it when she was a baby x

preggersplayspop · 26/12/2008 14:18

My DS does this, started about the same age and still does it now from time to time (he is 19mo). He tends to do it when he is frustrated or when I have ticked him off for some reason - sometimes he tries to whack me, but sometimes he just wallops himself on the head. I just try to make light of it and ignore it - I'm sure its just a phase. If you are worried though I would ask someone about it, but in my case I'm not concerned at all.

glad ds is not alone then! hopefully he'll grow out of it with some braincells left intact

My DS head bangs as well, first it was the end of his cot,
now it tends to be my bedhead, but only ever in the morning.

he has being doing it since he was about a year old (now 22mths)
now says 'ow' when he does it, but thinks it is funny, doesn't actually seem to hurt him.

I just assume it will be something he grows out of and don't worry about it.
