my 23mth old has been a brilliant sleeper since he was born. Regularly stayed asleep all night till 8.30/9am.

We've moved him into a proper bed and he has started getting up at 5am EVERY morning!! Then he stays awake till 3pm and naps for an hour. He isn't cranky when he gets up, he just wants to play and party!!

Argh, we are soooo tired!

Someone has suggested putting him back in a sleeping bag, but I'm a bit worried that if he tries to get up by himself in a sleeping bag he's going to hurt himself and fall out of bed.

Any ideas? Please tell me this is just a phase (he's been in his bed 3/4wks)

Can I ask why you moved him out of the cot? Was he starting to climb out?

Can you get him one of those rabbit clocks that tells them when they are allowed to get up and play? I think Blooming Marvellous sells them. Here's the link. My friend uses one and they're brilliant. We plan to get one when DS moves into his new room when DC2 arrives in the summer.

Our 2 year old DS is still in his cot because, luckily, he's quite little for his age and can't climb out. We're going to keep him in as long as possible to avoid him waking up early. Lots of my mates from my baby group have moved their DC into beds and had the same problem, so I think it's quite common, you are not alone.

Sorry for

Sorry - computer crashed before I finished the message. I meant to say, sorry for not being more helpful x

Don't let him nap so late for a start. If he needs a nap try and get him into a routine of 30 mins waking up at 2pm (take him in the car or pushchair)

We had this when DD2 moved to a bed but we struggled getting her to stay in bed in the evening and she'd wake up through the night. We put a stairgate on the door which fixed the wandering around.

See if any of that sorts out the 5am wakings first.

unless he can climb out of the cot himself I'd put him back in

TBH I bet he always woke at this time - but being in the cot meant he just rolled over and went back to sleep rather than sat up and yelled for you.

Stairgate on door and shut your door so you don't hear the noise of him playing & chatting?

And lots of dcs are in cots until 3-ish so put him back in it?

Thanks everyone...will try some of these suggestions.

We moved him out of the cot cos he's really big and kept bashing his head, legs on the side and crying...plus we've given the cot away now!

will keep trying!

Tee Hee.

My DS2 is 23 months and has been a HORRIFIC sleeper since he was born, never slept through ever UNTIL we moved him to a cotbed and now he's an angel, gets up at 7.30am and then plays in his room hapily.

So I feel for you. But am secretly delighted the hoo haa has passed to someone else.

He has a stair gate on his door so can't get out of his room. I am sure he will settle, just ignore him!

No advice, just secret glee!

PS: 8.30/9am is quite late, perhaps a few mornings of getting him up at 7.30am would retrain him to sleep longer in the morning, routine, shift the day/
