my 11 month old dd drinks so little it worries me loads, but i just can't seem to get her to drink more.
since weaning her from breastfeeding she's never really drank much from a cup. she always has a breakfast of say weetabix, with a good few ounces of milk. but apart from that she may have a couple of ounces of milk morning and evening, and literally a few sips of water all day.
i've tried different cups, drinks etc. she has yoghurt and fruit too, but it just seems impossible she can survive off so little. it worries me loads.
she's fine in herself mind, and doesn't seem dehydrated. it just doesn't seem right.
if she doesn't want a drink, she pushes the cup away and gets really angry.
my ds (3 years old) doesn't drink much either, but he was never this bad!
any advice please?

What do you give her to drink?

My DC's seemed to hardly drink, untill I put some apple juice in with their water.

my dd never drank anything either, she sounds very much like yours although she was bottle fed. As soon as she was weaned she dropped her milk and hardly touched a drop of liquid.

I asked HV about it and she said as long as child is well, pooing and weeing, there is enough liquid in their food.

DD started drinking when she was 18mths/2yrs and now never stops!

Hiya, have you tried giving it to her from a bottle? (might seem like going backwards, but then she's only 11 months...)

If I give my dd a drink from a cup, she'll drink a couple of ounces only - but with a bottle she'll finish the lot!

i've tried all sorts...water, juice, smoothie, formula milk, cows milk.

she never took to drinking from a bottle. bf til 9 months, so only since then i've been concerned about liquid intake.

i know in my heart of hearts shes ok. but you still really worry don't you?
its good to hear of others the same. thanks.

my kids hate water, maybe juice would help?

oh sorry, just seen you've tried that!

needmorecoffee · 21/12/2008 09:33

have you actually measured how much she is getting?
We were told for years that as long as a child was wee-ing it was ok. Turns out that with sips plus food dd was getting 120ml's a day rather than the 1000ml's a 4 year old needs.

My 14 month old DS also refuses to drink much, but he is horrendously constipated most of the time. If your DD is still pooing and weeing, then I would not worry.

One succes I have had is to offer him a tetrapack of apple juice. I squeezed the pack and the juice came out the straw into his mouth and he thought it was fab. Next I bought a beaker with a straw and he loves it (although still not drinking enough for me to stop the laxatives... )
