In hospital car park, at dusk -

DS1 (2.4): Look mum, flashing lights!
Me: (peering into the distance) I can't see any flashing lights

DS1: Look! Look mummy! Flashing lights!
Me: (peering harder) I still can't see any, do you mean the ambulances we saw on the way in?

DS1: Mum! Look, flashing lights, flashing lights!
Me: (crouching to see whether I can see flashing lights at toddler level) No DS1, I still can't see any flashing lights

DS1: Flashing lights! Flashing lights!

Turn to DS1 to see him looking at the lights on in the hospital and frantically opening and closing his eyes to make...flashing lights!

cruisemum1 · 19/12/2008 22:16

this thread is great! I have so many conversations like this with ds 2.3yrs. Mostly though, he likes to disagree with me - even if it is to his detriment!

jerisca · 19/12/2008 22:20

LOLOLOLOLO!!! oh so funny reading them all, my 2.5yr old has got to the point that he anserws his questions at the same time- he will come in the room see dad on computer and say hello daddy what doing? on computer? or will follow you in2 bathroom what doing mummy? having a wee? they are such funny things :0

ChasingSquirrels · 19/12/2008 22:20

so there was a benefit to ds2 not speaking until 2.7y and not having converstaions until 2.9y - he missed this stage, which I remember well from ds1.

Feenie · 19/12/2008 22:50

Here's my personal favourite:

Me: Would you like some cereal, sweetheart?
Ds(3): Yes please
Me: Choose which one then.
Ds:No, Mummy choose.
Me: If I choose, you will say 'no' to every single one. You choose, and let me know which one when you're ready.
Ds: Nooooooooo, Mummy choose.
mesigh) Right, Cheerios?
Ds(flatly): No.
Me: Porridge?
Ds: No
Me: Weetabix?
Ds: No.
Me: Right, I don't know which one you want then. Have nothing, or choose which one.
Ds: No, Mummy, YOU choose.
(Sigh)

Twinklemegan · 19/12/2008 23:21

Lotster - I deal with the poo denial exactly the same way! But sometimes, if he insists there's no poo, there is indeed no poo (God knows what DH feeds him sometimes..) Then I feel really guilty.

It's not a conversation as such, but my personal favourite at the moment happens when we play ball. DS (2.4) is just learning to catch, if we're close together. So it goes:

Me: [throw ball]
DS: [catches ball][throws ball back]
Me: Well done darling! Clever boy!
DS: Mummy go clapping!
Me: Oh yes, sorry. [claps obligingly]

Me: [throw ball]
DS: [drops ball]
Me: Oh dear, never mind. Try again.
DS: Mummy go clapping!
Me: But you didn't catch the ball darling OK [claps] good try sweetheart.

Me: [throw ball]
Repeat ad nauseum...

underpaidandoverworked · 20/12/2008 11:24

DD - Can I have a brink please
Me - You mean a drink?
DD - Yes a brink
Me - Say d-rink
DD - d-rink
me - Say drink
DD - Brink
me - Say d-rink
DD - d-rink
ME- say drink
DD - Juice!!!

dd 2 years old in back of car with ds 5yrs

ds- say mammy's stupid
dd - mammy's stupid
ds - say daddy's stupid
dd - daddy's stupid
ds - say I am stupid
dd - you are stupid (at which point ds gave up!!)

earlyriser · 20/12/2008 13:23

oh these are so funny and so familiar!
This morning, dd climbs into our bed at 6.30.

'mummy, i dreamt about cars, was did you dream about?'
me 'I dreamt about dolphins'
dd 'NO I dreamt about dolphins, you dreamt about cars'
me 'oh, ok then, i dreamt about cars, what did you dream about'
dd 'no I dreamt about cars...
and so on...

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 20/12/2008 13:28

no mine skipped the 'whatchoo doing' phase and jumped straight into the 'why' phase

why are you wiping the table?
because it is dirty
why?
because some food spilled on it
why?
by accident probably
why?
well im sure you wouldn't delibertately spill food on the table.
why?
well that would be naughty wouldn't it?
why?
because then I would have to clean it all off
why?

and on and on and on.

tinselandglittercoveredwincies · 20/12/2008 18:48

Ahh Feenie, been there with the cereal (and stories)!

Ds also currently feels that he has to shout 'it's Chriiiiiistmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas' in a Slade-type fashion when anyone pays him any attention when we're out . He must have heard it on the radio, although I have no recollection of it .

hunnybun1981 · 20/12/2008 23:55

hi ladies

i will say one thing be thankful they may drive you insane but we have an autistic child who doesnt speak an what we would give.

but i also have a 3 year old who never shuts up lol, but what i would give for my eldest to be like that

hollyhobbie · 21/12/2008 17:56

Reading this thread has made me realise that the 'why?' phase, which I thought would never end, HAS ended, and I never even noticed...

Never forget: This too will pass. This too will pass. This too will pass...

tinselandglittercoveredwincies · 21/12/2008 18:19

And when ds is a sullen teenager and communicated in grunts I'm wish for these days back again .

hotCheeseBurns · 21/12/2008 18:26

ds was fiddling with my collapsible washing basket this morning...

is it broken mummy?
yes
why is it broken?
because you broke it
did i break it mummy?
yes, a long time ago
can you fix it?
no, it's broken, it can't be fixed
i can fix it
okay
i fixed it for you mummy
okay. thanks.
mummy, is it fixed?
umm not really
is it broken?
yes
did i break it?

etc etc

ODmummy · 21/12/2008 20:49

Feenie we have the cereal choice thing too with DS1 who is 2 yrs 8 mo.

We are also having a lot of "why?" Including DS1 asking why DS1 himself did / said something?

"what did I say?"
"why did I say that?" etc etc

Also, at the moment he will say he wants something, we get it then he says "no, I don't want that", so we go to remove offending item, then we get "I wanted that" and then on and on "I want it" "I don't want it" in alternation.

cmotdibbler · 21/12/2008 21:08

DS, aged 2.7, has a life packed full of Why, Where, What, and Who.

Every vehicle on the road is commented on, and the destination of their occupants questioned.

Any attempt not to answer a Why question is met with 'No, you tell me mummy'

I'm tired of talking today....

janzilla · 21/12/2008 21:40

at least its questions your ones are asking! all my 18month ols says it THIS! and points to what he wants this this this all day

underpaidandoverworked · 21/12/2008 21:52

Santa claus today with DS (4yrs)

SC - What would you like for xmas?
DS - silence
SC - Don't you want me to bring you any presents?
DS - silence
SC - there must be something you want for xmas?
DS - no, mammy and daddy have bought all my presents and they're in the garage - but daddy would really like a bottle of whisky please (exit 1 embarassed daddy!!)

Feenie · 21/12/2008 22:00

Thanks, other cereal conversationalists, good to know I am not alone!

JimJammum · 21/12/2008 22:06

I have to add on to this one....once I hav wiped the tears from my eyes.
Last week we were coming back from somewhere in the dark. We passed some fountains that we had noticed on the way there. Now, it is dark and there are no lights so we cannot see them.
ds: Fountains?
JJM: It's too dark - we can't see them.
DS: Dark fountains.
JJM: yes, they've gone in the dark.
DS: Fountains gone. Dark.
JJM: Yes
DS: Fountains gone.
JJM: Yes.
DS: Fountains gone.
JJM: Yes.
DS: Fountains gone
JJM: Yes.
DS: Fountains gone

repeat for next 10 minutes of car journey. By this time, I am not replying.

DS: (Leaning forward in his car seat to pear at me through the gloom, and beaming widely). Hello Mummy!
JJM: Hello sweetie.
DS: Fountains gone.
and so it starts again. 30 minutes of car journey.
