20 wk old making strange gasping noise

Does anyone have any idea what this could be...? For the past couple of days my 20 wk old DS has been making alarming shrill and sharp intakes of breath, then often holding his breath.

It sometimes happens straight after a feed but also occurs during and occasionally quite a while after a feed.

At first I couldn't work out whether he was deliberately doing it (ie just making a new sound) because he seemed quite content while it was happening but now it seems more like an involuntary spasm as he's doing it mid feeds, it's waking him when he's trying to drift off to sleep and now actually seems to be distressing him.

He's exclusively breast fed and has been arching his back and coughing a little bit during feeds. He's also been very wriggly and unsettled the last few days, seems to have a permanent snotty nose and often pulls his ears so am thinking it could be teething, or reflux? Or both? Is it true there's a link between teething and digestive problems?

I would take him to the doctor. He may have bronchiolitis and an ear infection so best to get it checked out.

I took him to see the gp a few days ago because of the ear pulling as was worried about it being an infection and he said ears and chest were clear so thought it was just teething or a cold. This was before he started making this noise though, so am planning taking him again tomorrow. I seem to be going to the doctors every week (DS has also had a bit of ezcema) and I think they're getting fed up with me, but I don't really trust the advice of the HV's at our local clinic having had conflicting advice from them in the past...

I don't have any advice i'm afraid but my lo of the same age frightened me half to death the other day half way through a feed. She started making these horrible growling/gasping noises which sounded like they were coming from her windpipe or chest. My immediate OTT thought was "OMG she's having an allergic reaction and is going to diiiiieeee"....erm she was fine but I was half way through calling 999. All the time this is going on she was smiling and babbling like normal?!!! WTF

It was weird. was your experience simular?

MK75 · 09/12/2008 13:53

yes very similar, was really alarming! Took him to the doctor today and his chest is clear so they just said to keep an eye on it and it might be reflux. Not very helpful really!

@MK75 hi I know this is so old but I was wondering whether you got to the bottom of this because my son also does those sharp intakes of breath especially during feeding xx
