When did your dc sit up by themselves?

Ds has just turned 6 months and is happily crawling around but he cannot sit up yet. Dd was crawling at the same age but could sit up beforehand. He has plenty of strength but just falls sideways if you try and sit him up! What age is average? Do you think being in a cloth nappy might make a difference to it? They are quite bulky, but he has no difficulty crawling with one on.

7 months or so

Weegle · 07/12/2008 19:05

same with all these thigns - varies from baby to baby - quite a lot. DS was sitting independantly from 4 months BUT he didn't crawl did well gone 9 months or roll until over a year!

osborne · 07/12/2008 19:08

my first two sat up at about six months but third is seven months and showing no interest. she crawls and pulls herself up but can't keep still long enough to sit. am not worried about it though.

piscesmoon · 07/12/2008 19:15

I would say 6 months but they do it in their own speed, if she can crawl you really don't need to worry IMO.

littleducks · 07/12/2008 20:00

ds can sit really well at 8 months and has been since 5/6 months but he cant move, so has had lots of practice, if he could crawl im sure he wouldnt bother to sit!

Hulababy · 07/12/2008 20:14

17 weeks unaided. She was always an upright type of baby. Hardly crawled at all preferring t be sat or on her feet.

StealthPolarBear · 07/12/2008 20:30

about 6 months (in fact was a few days later as my birthday) - it was the first time I left him sitting up (gorilla-style) long enough to take a photo!
A couple of days earlier he had shown no sitting ability whatsoever, a week or so later he was crawling and twisting himself into a sitting position from a crawl!

nickytinseltimes · 07/12/2008 20:32

Ds was about 8 mths iirc!

mynewnickname · 07/12/2008 20:33

Very normal not to be able to at 6 months.

QueenFee · 07/12/2008 20:37

Interesting My DD could sit up at 5 months (before she crawled at 6 mths) DS was crawling at 6 months but couldnt sit up till 8 months.

callmeovercautious · 07/12/2008 20:41

5m. However it was no indicator of being physical! She did not crawl until 10m and walked at 16m. She was just so happy to be sat upright - it helped her wind issues She did shuffle on her bum earlier than 10m but I don't really remember when, a month or two before maybe.

IlanaK · 07/12/2008 20:44

Just to throw a spanner in the works - do you call it sitting up if they have their hands on the floor in front of them? My 4 month old can "sit" unaided but only if his hands are placed in front of him on the floor.

babyOcho · 07/12/2008 20:56

DD sat from about 5 months.

I have observed that the early mobile ones tend not to sit as well because they are too busy crawling or rolling around.

I wouldnt worry about it if I was you, they really are all so different.

littlelamb · 07/12/2008 20:59

Just to hijack my own thread- Ilana- I promised you a photo of myself and ds in our Close sling- I will try and get one tomorrow- we have chicken pox in the house and it's all gone a bit mad! I have just got a Kari Me wrap sling and I'm telling you, there's no change of feeding in it, which is not such a problem now ds is a bit bigger but would have been disappointing at first. The only sitting ds can do is kind of using one hand to prop himself artfully to one side from the crawling position

8 months and 1 week!

ANTagony · 07/12/2008 21:05

DS2 it seamed really late, he could stand but wouldn't sit unpropped until about 11 months.

StealthPolarBear · 07/12/2008 21:17

Ilana - I considered DS to be able to sit when he could do the hands propped thing (gorilla) but without any other support. Not sure if that's what other people would call it.

IlanaK · 07/12/2008 21:40

Don't worry littlelamb - whenever you can do it would be great!

If we are counting the gorilla hands thing, then my ds can do it at 4 months old.
