DS is 2 and 2 months. He's still happy in his cot, but thinking it was time he had a more grown up bed. Also, what age do you give a pillow? any tips much appreciated!

moven tehm into a bed when they start showing signs of climbing out of the cot!

We gave both DD1 and DD2 a pillow around the age of 1 when they had a cold to help them keep their head up a little - they both loved their pillows and started sleeping much better for it (did the same with duvets at that age too) however it is not advisable to give a pillow or duvet to any child under the age of 1 but you'll be fine now Gem

ds1 moved into a bed at about 2.5 i think. can't really remember,.
stayed in it til he started climbing out anyway.

he got a pillow when he went into his bed. but he rarely uses it

ds2 is 13 months and has a pillow which I gave him because when he is in bed with me he always wants to sleep on mine

DS 2 1/2 ys has just asked for a pillow in the last month, since we've taken the side off his cot - he loves being able to get in and out of bed as he chooses, which we're hoping he grows out of fairly soon ...

TheLadyEvenstar · 03/12/2008 00:22

DS1 10yrs never had a pillow until he went into a bed at 8 months and that was because he managed to break the base of his cot....

DS2 14m has always slept on a pillow since he was a few days old as we co-slept and i just carried it over to when he went into his own cot...

he hasn't gone into a bed yet as he is a mini terror lol into everything unlike ds1...oh am i having a wake up call this time round lol.....best thing is ds2 sleeps alllllllll night.

ok, thanks all! WIll consider taking side off cot as a preparation (cot is needed for new baby due end March), so want to move him into a toddler bed, but not too near the birth so he feels ousted, well before, around Christmas...

i honestly wouldn't move him if he's happy. they can get very attached to their cot/bed

can't you borrow a moses basket or a crib for the new baby, that would buy you another 6 months?

thequietone · 03/12/2008 09:24

DS1 was about 2 1/2, and it coincided with a house/country move.

DS was just under 3 when we got rid of his cotbed. He never tried to climb out of it and was blissfully happy in it but i'm expecting in Jan.
We got him a single bed and he helped put it together with Daddy with all of his tools and we put it where his cot used to be and put the cotbed on he other side of the room and let him choose which bed he wanted to sleep in.He jumped straight in the single bed and snuggled down much to our surprise. After about a week of having the same choice and always choosing the single bed we said the cotbed was getting in the way and should we put it away.He said "No, don't put it away you can put it in the babys room so they have a bed to sleep in"Bless.
He never gets out of bed untill we go into the room in the morning and is quite happy lying there chatting to himself when he wakes in the morning.
HTH.

We got ds (then 2.2) one of the Ikea beds childrens beds with animals on the headboard which he immediately loved - and he went in straight away, but we left the cot in his room. He has only just recently started having a pillow and rarely sleeps with his head on it - normally he snuggles up just below it!

We gave DS (who was 2 in Oct) a pillow and duvet (had previously been using sleeping bags) at about 18months. I think a pillow is deemed safe at 12months.
He got moved into a little bed from his cot several months ago as he was able to climb out and may have hurt himself.
If he wasn't able to climb out of the cot I would have happily continued to use it.

thanks all,

pmywitch, I hadn't thought of moving him AFTER baby is born, perhaps that's better... I'd wanted to move him before. He is totally happy in the cot, I just didn't want to be holding up his development or whatever.. (can you guess it's a precious firstborn!)

We used an Amby hammock so ds moved into his ikea toddler bed at 15mths. He's fine. i put him in a grobag to reinforce the idea of not getting out of bed but so far (3ths) he's hardly got himself up again. But he is a good sleeper on the whole.
