Do all toddlers (boys) play with cars?

DS is just 19 months and doesn't really show much interest in cars. Likes trains a bit more but other than the click-clack-track thing, has never pushed a car along going 'brum brum'. Is it supposedly an innate 'boy' thing? Wondered if there were any other boys who just aren't that interested.

I think my 2's car stage came quite a bit later than 19 months. I think they were about 2 1/2.

It coincided with the dinosaur stage, so we would have endless games of dinosaurs eating cars, cars running over dinosuars....you get the idea.

And when I say 'stage' it's still going on.....

SmallShips · 02/12/2008 18:49

My DS was about 2 when he started the car stage, still going strong now at nearly 3.

Thanks. We met some friends recently whose 15 mo is obsessed with them, and apparently has been so since he was a year. Plus having spent the last couple of weeks looking for Xmas presents finding much else for this age is proving a challenge!

DS 2.6 still not overly interested in cars. He'll occasionally play with them. In fact he isn't "obsessed" with anything in the way some toddler boys are over cars or trains.

Klaw · 02/12/2008 19:13

I played with cars as a young girl, and was gutted when my father didn't bring them over from Africa when we moved to Scotland (I was 9)

ds played with cars and now dd does too. Took a few to bed with her the other night. and she's playng with 3 red cars as I type!

So, it's not just a boy thing. And I can't recall at what age it started either....

I still love my cars (41)

Fabs80 · 03/12/2008 07:19

my 2 1/2 yo son wasn't into cars at the start he had a doll that he slept with EVERY NIGHT without fail.. he has stared playing with cars....but he plays with anything that makes a noise really

seeker · 03/12/2008 08:22

I think boys are generally either car boys or train boys. Mine has been a car boy since he was 1 - he's 7 now and still plays with cars a lot. When he's not watching re runs of Top Gear on Dave, that is......

ummadam · 03/12/2008 09:19

my 10m old has two cars he pushes around the room (and over the fishtank ) all the time withg a huge grin on his face! He is completely unaware that they are cars or that it is a boy thing but would happily push a bright pink butterfly if it had wheels

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 03/12/2008 09:31

Well he doesn't really push anything around, except his (girl) cousin's pink doll's pram .

DS has loved cars since he was about 11 monnths, not quite so much now at 2.2 but does still like them. At just before 2 he discovered trains which he loves aswell.

purpleflower · 03/12/2008 09:35

He loves his pink pushchair too. He has a blue one aswell and chooses the pink, much to my delight and DPs annoyance

weblette · 03/12/2008 09:39

Dd not bothered, ds1 not interested, ds2 still a car/train obsessive at 4, ds3 not bothered yet at 11mo but that may be because he can never get near any...

ohdearwhatamess · 03/12/2008 09:47

My nephew was very late getting into cars (3+ years), and can take or leave them. Trains have always been his thing (from about 18 months), and diggers a close second.

My 2.7yo is obsessed with cars, and has been since about 15 months(ish). He takes at least one everywhere. Ds2 (9mo) is suddenly keen too, but I think he's just copying ds1. Ds1 likes trains, but can take or leave them.

Aeroplanes very popular here too.

bodiddly · 03/12/2008 09:58

my ds has always been more into animals than cars ... he will play with one every now and then .. same as with his train set but he would rather have a bunch of animals or dinosaurs any day!

dustyteddy · 03/12/2008 10:01

My ds loves cars too (3 years) Although, he is obsessed with fire engines. We have to stop in the street every time we see one, as it makes his day

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 03/12/2008 10:02

my DS1's car stage started about 18 months............and is still going stronger than ever - and he's 8

Indith · 03/12/2008 10:05

Ds hasn't been all that bothered until recently. Played with them a bit but was far more interested in his duplo. Now 23 months it is "brum brum, look, look car, car brum, brum, look car car car car car brum, look look car" with the occasional "wayo wayo" if there is an emergency vehicle

Notquitegrownup · 03/12/2008 10:09

Neither of my boys ever liked cars, or dinosaur, but were train fans and ball addicts - tennis balls, footballs, bouncy balls, cricket balls, juggling balls, jingling balls . . . .
