Quick question re tummy sleeping

When's it safe to put a child down on their tummy to sleep? My dd is 9 weeks and a real "tummy sleeper" but she only does this on my chest. If she sleeps in her cot (rare!) I obviously put her on her back, but she hates it. At what age can I safely put her to sleep on her tummy?

i've been doing it with dd since she was about 4 months, but would probably get into trouble for it. i think it might be when they can roll over and back again that it is considered safe, and i suppose you can't stop them then anyway.

official sids advice is to always start a sleep session with your lo on their back. Up to the age of 6 months you are supposed to turn them back onto their back if you find them on their tummy and after 6 months they can sleep in whatever position they like.

From the sids website:

If your baby is less than six months old and you find him sleeping on his tummy, gently turn him onto his back. Don?t feel you need to keep getting up all night to check on this. Whatever your baby?s age, always place him to sleep on his back.
