8 month old stopped copying/making sounds but constantly says "brrrrrr"....

LO was always very vocal cooing from an early age. He's now 8 months old and since his first tooth came through, he tends to keep his mouth closed as much as possible. He had started to copy mamamama and dadada noises as well as saying boobooboo all the time - especially first thing in the morning when he wanted out of his cot. Now, though, he won't copy any noises we make - he just stares at our mouths but when he is happily playing he will make a "brrrr" kind of noise making his lips vibrate but no other noises unless he is crying.

Anyone else have experience of this kind of thing? OH is worried that there is something wrong with his hearing...

Any ideas?

Thanks

No expert but my guess is he's just worked out how to make that noise and he's obsessed with it. Wait a couple of weeks and see if he's still doing it.

I agree with mrsgboring. DD went from chatter and Mamama etc to blowing raspberries constantly for weeks

As she was teething it all got a bit soggy but as soon as she got used to the feeling in her mouth she started chatting again.

I also noticed she would get bored of a sound and stop it completly in favor of something else.

She still does it, her current favourite is "difficult". She uses it all the time (she is 26m) and I think it suits her atm

DS would make funny humminh "mmm-mmm" noises when he was teething his incisors.

Other than that he stopped making any effort to copy us for months and suddenly started again with a bang, the other day, when I couldn't work out what he was pointing at he started yelling "anana!" and waving at the fruit bowl

DD 10 months and used to chatter but now seems to shreik all day (unless I hold her), I would accept "brrr"! If you say it its actually quite a nice sensation so if he is teething (are they ever not?!) it could be related to that.

At the same age my DS started obsessively shaking his head as if saying no. It was just because he liked the sensation and he stopped doing it after a couple of months. He is a perfectly normal 2 year old now, though I wonder how many brain cells he shook off during that period! I am sure your DS is fine

Perfectly normal, both my dss got/get obsessed with one noise at a time. Presumably he had his new born hearing test?

We call it his telephone noise btw. Keep talking to him and making your own silly noises and he'll soom pick up again I'm sure.

If you're still worried in a couple of weeks take him to the docs for a check.
