3.5 year old uncooperative at nursery and 'away with the fairies' a lot of the time

Well, he's like that at home too, but it's becoming a bit of a problem at nursery. He's always been inclined to do what he wants to do and not much else - we manage by dint of threats and bribes (please don't just criticise this probably not brilliant strategy - we're looking for help and other ideas here!), but it's now rubbed off onto his nursery behaviour too. The nursery teachers DO make allowances - he has a streaming cold at the moment and I think they think that this is why he was completely uncooperative today. Maybe it is, though he goes from one cold to the next in the winter so I can't keep him off with every runny nose. Anyway, I've been talked to twice by his teacher about this and he hasn't even done a term yet. What the hell can I do to help him?????

Hiya CorrieDale, have very similar problems with my lo who is 3.8 who combines this away withthe fairies with a huge degree of stropiness. Am off to see the school tomorrow to talk about how we manage it. Will let you know how we get on.

Just a thought, but has he had his hearing checked? If he is prone to colds, has enlarged adenoids etc, maybe he is also suffering from restricted hearing?

It can be hard to tell, my dd had severe hearing loss from glue ear, neither myself or nursery spotted the hearing problem for ages, eventually I got suspicious when she kept asking for tv volume to be louder...

Hearing loss frequently causes behavioural problems, not least because they simply don't hear many instructions!
