Teething - which bit hurts?

DD has just cut a tooth but we have had no tears so far (touch wood) or flushed cheeks etc - it was a bit of a shock. Which bit hurts them, is it before the tooth emerges, or afterwards??

with mine it was always as the tooth was pusing thro.....altho with some teeth they just seemed to come with no warning, other teeth seemed to cause pain for weeks!

I found the worse teeth were the back molars and the front pointy teeth......they seemed to be the ones to actually make them 'ill' IYGWIM.

the first two seemed to shock me by just being there one day.......DD3 especially shocked me as I was still breastfeeding when she got hers

all my others were well over 10mths getting their first teeth.......the boys were 1yr old

IME definitely the bit before. We tend to get weeks of frequent wakings, writhing around and kicking and groaning at night, neck-stretching and general crankiness. Then it all stops and a few days later a tooth pops out.

Have fun with the molars

Seriously, some babies apparently aren't bothered at all. Which is inherently sensible, given that teething is a normal process and surely shouldn't hurt anyway?!

Ah yes, the feeding thing. Mine seems to want to BF 24/7 without coming up for air when there's a tooth on the way [great joy]

With us it happens in 2 stages. We get the grumps, the rashes, the sleepless nights and the crying when the tooth just appears through gum, then have w2 weeks of peace and then as it fully emerges we have it all again.
My h/v and dentist both tell me teething doesn't hurt which I think is complete crap, my wsdom teeth killed!
Lucky you if you can get thru it easily. It gets easier with each new tooth

Wow, thanks for the fast responses!

Yes, we are still BF too and I felt the tooth before I saw it. Great - I hoped she would get her teeth late. But I shall be thankful that we haven't had any pain or grumps yet. I'm sure it will come, just when we least expect it!
