MMmm - have 3 lo's (or rather medium ones now!) Ds aged 8 - hair still getting darker, dd1 aged 6 - hair dark brown now and has been fixed for a couple of years. dd2 is like ds and is steadily but slowly getting darker. I remember my extremely blonde cousin only going to mid brown at puberty.

mamainstripes · 15/11/2008 18:04

I am 31 and mine is still changing. I was a very blonde child and was still blonde when I was in early 20s. Now its non descript but I'm hoping in will go a nice dark brown in a few years

Mercy · 15/11/2008 18:07

Yes, I also think by puberty is when it stays the same colour.

For example my mum had very blonde hair as a young child but it was mid/dark brown by the time she was 10 or so.

I had very dark brown hair as a baby, it got lighter as a toddler and was very dark brown/black by my early teens.

Mercy · 15/11/2008 18:09

See, we've just been proved wrong by mamainstripes!

My hair is just getting more grey atm, boo hoo

TheBlonde · 15/11/2008 18:10

thanks
DS was ginger at 3 mths but is blonde now
DD is 18mths and I'm wondering if she will remain gingery or not

Mine got steadily darker and it's still changing.

Mainly because I dye it though.

Horton · 15/11/2008 19:05

I had curly blonde hair as a baby. It got steadily darker and straighter until about age 7 or 8 when it was pretty much like it is now. It did get wavier again when I was about 33, rather randomly.

snorkle · 15/11/2008 19:12

a hairdresser told me once that blonde children who are going to turn more mousey usually darken by or around age 8.

PerkinWarbeck · 15/11/2008 19:12

I think blondes often darken later in life. Mine darkened during puberty, and seems to have darkened again after pregnancy.

ChukkyPig · 15/11/2008 19:35

I read that blonde hair just gradually gets duller over the years for some reason.

I was a white blonde child, then it went a bit darker at about 23 and is now a sort of yellowy blonde colour.

Bubbaluv · 15/11/2008 19:43

My uncle was born white blond and was like that as a toddler and young child and is now very dark brown/almost black! Not sure when it actually happened, but he really is dark and swarthy and you'd never pick himin his baby photos!

Well, I was a kind of golden blonde (dark blonde) until I was about 8 or 9. Now I have brown hair. Not very dark, but dark to ever be described as blonde. So I'd agree, it's 'fixed' at about 8 or 9. Before puberty. Not at puberty like a lot of people think.

TheNewsMonger · 15/11/2008 19:49

Weirdly, I think it is getting a bit lighter again now. I am in my late thirties. I've been accused of dying it. I haven't.

tuesdayafternoon · 15/11/2008 19:52

Mine were mousy babies, became blonde children, & then darkened to virtually the same shade of mouse again.

TheNewsMonger · 15/11/2008 19:58

My children are 1/4 Guyanian and have gold hair. I think it can not stay that colour! genes are weird.

Andthentherewerethree · 15/11/2008 20:12

oh i hoped it was about 2 as dd is blonde blonde gorgeous curls too, and i ahd hoped it would stay that way, but i am guessing as dh is dark brown and i am mousey brown shes unlikely to stay blonde, however my dad is blonde with blue eyes liek dd, so fingers crossed it skipped a generation to dd, as her hair colour is so lovely.

melpomene · 15/11/2008 20:25

I was blonde until I was 12 or 13, then it darkened to brown.

Heated · 15/11/2008 20:34

We all have straight brown hair but in different shades, except dd who is blond with curls. But she'll end up brown-haired like the rest of us, before puberty, but probably gold-toned brown like dh rather than with my & ds' more auburn-toned hair.

And it's not just hair that changes, my brother started out with grey-blue eyes like me, but in the last 10 years they have become more a blue-turquoise green, and are quite stunning .

DisasterArea · 15/11/2008 20:37

i was white blond as a small child, nice blond untill i was about 15ish now mouse. still think of myself as blond though, am always surprised to see myself brown.

bozza · 15/11/2008 20:43

Idon't think there is a hard and fast rule. Just look at this thread. DS was a blonde toddler but was mid brown by age 4 (mousy at 3). DD is aged 4 and still blonde.

fruitful · 15/11/2008 20:50

My hair was black until I was 16. Then it started going grey - boo-hoo. 20 years on, it is thoroughly grey (under the dye).

My dad was blonde until he was 6, when his hair changed to black over the course of a year or so. DD is blonde, and 6, so I am watching with interest! MIL and SIL are both blonde though, so perhaps dd will stay blonde.

And eyes! Ds1 is 3.5 and I can see now that his eyes will be brown. But they were blue for ages, and then greeny.

henrys7thwife · 16/11/2008 00:50

Agree with others - no set age obviously! Was born with few black sparsey hairs, disappeared was bald til 1, then was white blonde until 4-ish, sandy, stayed varying shades of blonde/brown until about 12 when it went quite dark one winter and never turned back. Still very light brown though on the 'brown spectrum'. Also, my hair still to this day gets lighter in summer, quite blonde if I'm in the sun for most of the time.

DH has jet black hair.

DS1 born with black hair, has been blonde til now (nearly 9) still what I'd call 'dishwater blonde'.

DD1 born bald, white hair until age of 4, then it went mousy and it's about same colour as mine now.

DD2 born black hair, bald til 2, came in mousy, has darkened to darker than me but still not black.

DS2 born bald, is yellow blonde at the moment, he's 2.5

DS3 born head full of black hair (first one!) it's nearly all disappeared now but it's still dark.

shanjayne · 16/11/2008 19:43

It definitely seems to happen any time ... I had black hair at birth, blonde as a child, fair as an adult then in my mid 20s I went much darker. Now I'm going grey so I'm working my way through the full range!

TheBlonde · 16/11/2008 21:28

thanks everyone
