Hope this is the right place to post for this sort of thing. Dd is going to a pirate fancy dress party soon. I've looked on the web for costumes but they are either too expensive or don't go down to her size (she's short and only just going into 2-3 yrs trousers and has a tiny waist). Any suggestions for a suitable cheap top/skirt I could buy or maybe how to make something? I'm not too bad with a sewing machine.

I think I would probably find a plain top, a pair of black trousers and a pair of red tights. Tights on under trousers and then trousers rolled up to the knees and secured. A thick piece of material tied around the waist and knotted at the side. Bandanna/headscarf on the head, knotted at the back and an eyepatch. If there was time I would try and get/make a black waistcoat with gold buttons and accessorise with skulls and crossbones/cardboard sabre.

Marks and Spencer do great pirate pyjamas with a belt with 'sword ' and hand hook thing. Bit expensive at £18 but easy!

pirate costume is the easiest to get together yourself!

Cut off a pair of old jeans and fray the edges, put on a stripey t shirt and a bandana and/or eye patch (can get these from joke shops)

Hey presto - a pirate.

If you buy a costume, she'll look the same as everyone else
