How do I get my almost 4 year old dd to give up her dummy?

Yes, I know I should have dealt with this a LONG time ago but she really really loves her dummy. She only has it at bedtime but I want it gone!!!
We have told her once she is 4 it is going and it is her birthday soon - I want to wait until after Xmas as can't face a Xmas of stress about her dummies!
Any ideas on how to make it easier/less stressful for her and me?
Help!!!

Thats a good idea kerry! I was slightly more harsh with DS and cut the teat off his and handed it back to him - he just accepted it after that!
