Does anyone elses 14 month old not say a single word?

he makes lots of sounds and noises, but nothing vaguely word-like, unless you count 'ungh' which he tends to say if he's 'talking' directly to you as opposed to general background babble.

am not overly concerned, just interested...

My 15 months old says goo-goo (mummy) ah-googoo (daddy) guh, giga (iggle piggle) bababababa, and eeeee (high pitched noise which represents the cats)

So no proper words, but don't discount the "ungh" - it probably means something to him if he's saying it often enough in the same situations.

My DS1 didn't say any discernable words at 14 months but he was talking like a good 'un at 2.

So long as he is babbling and having 'conversations' with you and appears to be understanding simple things I wouldn't worry.

Thankfully I had DS1 first as DS2 was talking in sentences by 18mths so DS1 would have worried me had he been born second.

Urdle Durdle is about as good as it gets. Sometimes it's urdle urdle durdle urdle. I'm not sure what it means though He does say mama, but I don't think it's in the right context, ie talking to me (sometimes it is, but this might be an accident)

He also says dat when pointing at something.

Nothing else.

Was walking at 10 months though so I figured his brain has been working on that for a while and the words will come soon enough.

It varies so much. my DS didn't say anything much until about 20 months. Now just 2 he has new words every day.

If he understands you; moves to music ; hearing is good and makes other verbalisations I would say he was very normal.

The 14 month old is my DS2 and he is considerably slower at talking than ds1 ever was at that age. DS1's speech now at 3.5 is brilliant, but it didn't really get going with him until his 2nd birthday.

I wasn't that worried about ds2 because I had it in the back of my mind that number 2s tended to be slower at talking??

My DS hardly uttered a word until he was over 2 yet my DD whos 2 on wednesday talks in sentences and has been for quite some time. It really varies so much but they all get there in the end.

My ds1 said nothing till about 16m then by 18 m was linking words just like the others who'd started speaking much earlier.
Ds2 was an early talker.

They are 2 and 3 and in the full throes of broken-record-toddler-speak and 'why mummy' 'but why mummy' 'mummy, WHY?????'

Now I look back wistfully on the days when I had a gurgling newborn and a silent 16m old....

my 14mth old says nothing legible, whereas a friend's 15mth old says words like 'more' and even 'zebra'!!!. I am quite chilled about this as her dad didn't say anything legible until he was over two and as she is my third, I am used to the fact that children all grow up differently.

mine didnt. she barely said a word at 23 months. then she went to nursery and now at 26 months i can't beleive how much she is talking....
if he is making signs of communication that is what is important.

I just find it amazing sometimes that two children can develop at such different paces and have to constantly remind myself that this is totally normal...

My Uncle said nothing (at ALL) until he was nearly 4 and everyone was sure there was something terribly wrong. Then one night at the dinner table he said "Please pass the salt"!! Turns out he'd been practising quietly to himself but wanted to make sure he's got it right before he went public!
He is odd though.
