When did you move your child to a bed rather than a cot?

My DS - ok he's only 12 months - has taken a big big dislike to his cot and likes to be on the bed with the squashy duvet and a nest of pillows. He's ill at the moment so haven't been resorting to firm measures (controlled crying) to make him sleep in the cot. When he's better I could get tough. But I'm interested to know when you can move them to a bed without worrying about them falling out and hurting themselves. Also what about pillows in the cot? I think now he's 12 months the risk of suffocation is much lower, so as long as they don't allow him to climb over the side are pillows OK?
Thanks

I put a pillow in after about 20 months with a duvet. My son is 2 next month and he's still in his cot with the sides, but then he's not that tall. I think some of my friends with similar age babies have started taking the sides off or putting their DC in big beds. They need side guards (or a wall) to stop falling out.

I know I'm going to keep DS in his cot as long as poss. The thought of him getting out of bed and playing with his toys fill me with horror a bit!

My dd is 2.2 and will move into a bed in a week or so, when it gets delivered, plus we need the cot for dd2 in a couple of months.

i will be putting a gate on her bedroom door though!

My twin DDs were very young when I took the sides of their cots to make them into beds. I think they were about 14 months, and they seemed to cope with it all very well. We were forced into it when I found one of them had shimmied over the top of her cot and climbed in with her sister. Thought it was safer to turn them into beds.

older ones had mattresses on the floor about one. DD is 4 and has never had a cot. She co-sleeps.

Oh yes, definitely a stair gate on door! Forgot to mention that!

Ahh, that's taken me back, we used to frequently find our DDs naked, lying on the bedroom floor, fast asleep, surrounded by books, toys, and general chaos .

21 mo has just had cot bed converted to the bed with a small babydan rail.

All mine were about 20 months or so.

They also all had pillows and cot quilts from about 9 months or so.

DS has had the side of his cotbed off since about his 2nd birthday. Oddly, it never seems to have occurred to him in the last 4 months to get out of bed!

He still doesn't have a pillow, usually likes to sleep facedown in the mattress with his arse in the air
