15m olds - what are yours doing?

I have 15mo twins, who were born 5 weeks prem, but have always been a little more than 5 weeks behind in their development.

I haven mentioned to HV on several occasions to which I've been told "normal" is such a broad range, that it's hard to tell at this stage whether it's normal for them or a cause for concern.

Anyway, just thought I'd ask MN.

They have been crawling for about 2 months, one twin can pull herself up to standing but doesn't very often, neither coast or make any attempt to "walk", they babble but don't say anything recognisable like mamma or dadda. They are only just making moves to feed themselves with cutlery, i.e. dipping a spoon in a yoghurt pot and waving it in the general direction of their mouth.

Am I right to be concerned or is this still late but normal?

i would say sounds about normal for prem babies my brother andi were prem twins and we did everything couple of months behind others and got to about 2 half and caught up cpmpletely

so try not to comprte children do things at different times to others generally so you will find yourself always comPARING OTHER WISE IF HV FEELS REASSURED ALL IS WELL THEN TRY NOT TO WORRY

anyone else with 15m olds?

my dd is 15 months and so we see lots of kids the same age and they are all so different! Did they have the 8 month check, did that go ok?

I've mentioned my concerns at all the previous checks but as they were early and all babies are different we were told to hold out a bit longer and see if they caught up.

DD1 was walking well at a year old and feeding herself with a spoon at this age, and saying a few words. My friend's baby who is only 2 weeks older also seems a lot more advanced and older than my girls. I know comparing isn't an accurate assessment, but I just can't help it!

my dd has been faster at some things and slower at others but i think they like to check kids if they are not walking by 18 months so maybe mention it when you get them weighed? If they are small perhaps they aren't strong enough yet?

Bibi, it doesn't sound to me, from your description, that you have anything to worry about.

Firstly, they are the equivalent of just under 14 months (adjusted age). So, if there was a almost-14 month old who wasn't walking or using cutlery well, would you be worried? I honestly wouldn't. My DS didn't walk till he was 15 months. Many of my friend's kids were later (and met an 18 month old in the park last week who wasn't walking), and some never crawled or cruised, just went straight to walking.

My DS is just 18 months now, and he still doesn't use cutlery, prefers using his fingers

If you are really worried about them perhaps you could see your GP (rather than your HV if she's not very helpful), but I really think there's nothing to worry about yet.

My ds is 15 months next week and although he does walk, he doesn't talk yet. To be honest from what you say about the cutlery seems to be right on target for babies of this age. From your description they sound perfectly 'normal' and I wouldn't worry at all. Like you say the range for development is so huge, my friend's little boy wasn't walking until 18 months and he wasn't prem but could talk at 12 months, they are all very different.
