A Question of Poop - If it's poop, it must be icky and a bit long

My DS is just 8 months old and in the past week or so has really taken to solid food - especially after we figured he wasn't tolerating dairy and I dropped the milk in the porridge & yogurt from his diet. So just now he had the biggest, most solid poop he's ever had and was less than pleased with his accomplishment. Whilst this was happening, I was in the midst of changing his nappy so I got a front row seat to the wonders of poop. What I noticed was a speck or two of blood in his poop. Is this normal? It almost seemed as if he broke a tiny blood vessel (there was a lot of drama during this poop). I haven't noticed it before but then I haven't been quite so up close and personal as he went about his business. I'd appreciate any thoughts or comments.
