Can anyone recommend good books for a 1 year old?

I'm looking to buy DS some new books with vouchers he got for his 1st birthday. He has some of those 'That's not my.....' books, some touchy feely ones etc and the usual one word per page type ones. I think something differnt now might be good but not sure what?

'Dear Zoo' is a good one. Also Nursery Rhyme books - there are some really nice collections out there.

Its a classic- all babies should have a copy!

DS has one with a fold out flap on each page and he quite likes it.

The Hungry Caterpillar comes in a board book version

Wibbly pig has lovely pictures

Miffy is super for the pictures and words

Each Peach Pear Plum by Allan Ahlberg is fab. DS adores "Click Clack Moo" and "Orange Pear Apple Bear"

at that age my boys loved a series of books about vehicles, i think they were called dazzling diggers, brilliant boats, and there were about six of them in total, one about terrific trains, another about rockets? cant remember them all but each page had a short rhyming sentence about the vehicle on it and told a short story, anyhow all of my boys loved them and we got to know them by heart. the pics are nice and colourful and there was alittle glossary at the end with pics, so you learnt the names of bits of diggers or trains or whatever the book was about i am sure if you google the name terrific trains they will come up, we got them at waterstones i think

Maisy books might do him well - my nearly 2 year old loves them. Some are board books with flaps. Bold pictures, simple story line. Dd also likes those ladybird Baby Touch books

Second Peepo and Dear Zoo, ds (and i) also love Picture This, there is always some new detail you´ve never seen before. It´s just lovely.

And despite all the gorgeous books in the world, ds (18m) current faves are big noisy tractors and it´s brother, big noisy trains

4madboys - lol - think our boys are cut from the same cloth thanks for those suggestions, have looked them up on amazon and they look fab.

i´m dying to get to the gruffalo etc but he still won´t sit still long enough to listen to the lovely rhymes.. he wants to POINT and SCREAM at THE TRAINS THE TRAAAAAAAAINS!

My dd loved and still loves Dr Zeus books like the cat in the hat, the grinch, one fish two fish red fish blue fish, etc. Really good rhythems

The Meg and Mog books and Elmer the Elephant books are also nice as they have such bright primary colours and simple stories.

Also Bartholomew Bear about a toddler bear that always says Nah, they find it hilarious

I second Maisy books, good for girls and boys and the books that have buttons with songs on them are great.

There are just so many. You could go to the library and see what he likes before buying as they are pricy these books. I buy loads from charity shops as well. Bear in mind that you will be reading his favourites on an endless repeat. My DD loved a book about a duck stuck in the muck and I used to go to sleep with it swimming in my head.

Another fan of Dear Zoo here, plus the same people have written another great one called 'Oh Dear', where a boy called Buster goes looking for some eggs. 'Where's Spot' is a classic; my DS (13 months) loves lifting the flaps and making some of the animal noises. He also loves really simple picture books like 'Baby's First Farm', and ones with several pictures on each page so that he can point to the picture and we shout out the name of the object.

Our DS is 10 months and has just got really into lift-the-flap books like Spot and Noisy Farm, he just loves lifting the flaps over and over although I have to be careful that he doesn't pull them off! We also got one from the library called Yuck! which is quite funny and good for reading out loud.

Who's hiding on the farm was so popular when borrowed from the library that we had to buy it ('Who's hiding out and about' and 'Who's hiding at home' were disappointing in comparison.)

And when I bought DD The Tiger Who Came to Tea, I thought I was just remembering a nice, little-known story from my childhood, but it ranks no 1 in Amazon's sales of books for children. I got the board book version so the pages can't be ripped. DD likes the picture of the milkman.
