Fontanelles

When do they close up completely? I know there's a huge variance, but what's the youngest/oldest age? Just wondering as 11-month-old DS's is still fairly big, but some of his peers have pretty much closed.

Not worried about it, just interested to know!

I was wondering the same the other day - I'm sure T1 was close to 2yrs old before his completely closed up, but T2 hasn't been well (teething I think) last day or two and I tried to find it to see if it was sunken at all and realised it had completely closed up - he's just turned 15 months.

My 10 mo old has a large slightly sunken fontanelle. It seems to be permanantly like this even though I give him loads of water...But reassuring to hear others have large fontanelles at this age - thanks for the thread!

S'OK! DS's fontanelle seems a bit sunken sometimes, then minutes later it's fine. The 'beating head' look is one I could really do without though

Hi hunkermunker DD1's fontanelle didn't fully close until around 2 years, but DD2's (at 6 months) is the size DD1's was at 18 months.

Just another little variation, to keep us all guessing I suppose!

Hulababy · 09/03/2005 17:32

Levanna - my DD's took ages to close too. Way beyond 18 months anyay.

There's a wide variation in when they close. Before 7 months is rare but they sometimes don't close until 2 years.

i was born without a fontanelle.

my stepmum has been a midwife 20 years and besides me shes never heard, seen or delivered a baby who was born without one.

does anyone else know anyone who was born without one and is there any side effects when you get older? i'm 21 now and i think maybe imbalances in my body were down to this.
