Tantrums......

dd has developmental delay and is probably about a year behind her actual age."Terrible twos" are kicking in.She is almost non-verbal so obviously getting quite frustrated.When she tantrums she is completely undistractable.How best to deal?If she is sitting on my lap she throws herself backward and "headbuts" repeatedly.At the moment I am ignoring the worst and signing/saying no firmly,to very little avail.Any sensible behaviour modification solutions?Thanks.

DD had a great one this morning. Took DS to his Paediatrician appt, and she was very very good. And then ruined it by throwing herself on the floor right at the entrance to the hospital

If it's in public, I just pick her up and take her either home or to the car.

At home, if she is having a full blown tantrum, I'll put her in her crib until she calms down. And then when she has calmed down, will get her to say sorry for hitting, kicking etc. And then it's over.

I don't know if this is the right thing to do or not....

The thing is it was quite easy to judge what was sending ds (nt) into a tizz,with dd it is quite unpredictable.Cos her poor little brain ain't wired like most peoples random things can set her off.Its OK while shes little but it worries me what her teenage years will bring..

I think creating a safe place and maybe ignoring worst behaviour may be a starting place but am intrigued as to if anyone else has any other tips.Thanks.
