2.5 year old and his naughtiness

my 2.5 year old ds is getting sooooooo naughty its unbelieveable! here is a list of what he has done recently:

-poured 6 pints of milk n juice on lounge floor after gettign through kitchen gate!
-drawn on all the walls
-thrown a remote controlled car at my friend
-wee'd on the cat

that is just a little list! i cant keep my eyes off him for 2 seconds! its driving me mad

DS1 nearly wee'd on DS2 today, but that was just a misfire on the potty. Weeing on the cat on purpose is hilarious!!!

hmmmmm. it is funny, but it isn;t. being destructive and weeing everywhere is not funny.

it can be really hard to keep a straight face, but 2.5 is not too young for discipline. we do naughty step, with a firm explanation of why she is on there. and distraction is good. when he goes for the wall with the pens ( which should be out of reach!! ) take him over to the table and give him paper

you have to have eyes in the back of your head and be firm and consistent, i think. and lots of positive reinforcemtn

It's not really 'naughtiness' at this age though. He prob doesn't understand why he shouldn't do these things.

lol it doesnt matter where i hide the pens (i can never find one myself) he finds one! the main problem is him sneaking out of his room in the morning and then doing something naughty, our room is next to ours and we have the door open but he sneaks so quietly we dont hear him and i can hear a pin drop at night!

oh and he went for a wee in his potty the other day and walked up to DH and threw it all over him, we have a naughty chair we use but that doesnt seem to work anymore! he also gets up 4/5 times a night wanting juice but he gets given water cos we know he doesnt like it and wont drink it but keeps him quiet for a whiloe. I think its more of a reasurrance that he has something in there, he wont sleep with out his light on (not a lamp but the main light) and we have tried everything, getting a lamp but he scrams, putting stars on the ceiling, but he wont have that big light off!

but hi sneaking out his room is becomign a BIG problem! we are gonna have to buy two more stair gates, one for lounge and one for bathroom cos he flooded the bathroom the other day then he will only be able to go in his room or ours in the morning!

god i sound like i never watch him but i have like 3 million pairs of eyes and still cant watch him 24/7! how do i stop him sneaking out his room in the morning? cos he is sooooo quiet u wouldnt know he had come out except for the noise of whatever he is destroying?????

oh and he knows what he is doing cos as soon as i walk in the room and before i say anything he says 'sorry mummy'

Put a stair gate over his bedroom door. We did this with dd when we first moved her to a bed. The gate is still there, but we don't shut it now.

has to be stair gate on the bedroom door.. and locks on donwstairs doors so if he does climb over the gate, he cannot get in any rooms downtairs. do you have a burglar alarm that you can set at night, so if he does manage to sneak down then he will set it off and you will wake up?

you need to be consistent and firm and back each other up , throwing wee is just not acceptable.. if the naughty chair does not work, find something else

Sorry - posted before I'd finished. Meant to say - think carefully. Sometimes nurseries are very good at flagging up special needs before they arise. However, in the case of my son, I believe the nursery weren't coping with dealing with 30 other children and my spirited, tantrumming, energetic little boy, and so calling in SENCO was a cry for help from them. Fair enough, but this could have had serious implications on y son's future /education. I think my opinions are borne out by the fact that he is now, just months later, virtually unrecognisable at nursery to the child he was 8 mths ago. He is still essentially a very spirited boy, quite bossy, wants his own way - but very obviously doens't have any special educational needs.

say you want to have cuddles in bed in the morning - make it into a game and then he will come and see you

Ignore complete his bad behaviour(and him for 2 minutes - no eye contact, no telling off,nothing) if he apologises say with as little fuss as possible ' well done for saying sorry don't do it again'

then don't mention it again to him (not on the phone to your mum/friends/DP)

make a star chart and everytime he is good for 15 mins (ie not playing up) give him a sticker

worked a treat with my 2.5 who was terrible

(had to keep going back to it, and still do)

ok thanks will try that lot, i do ignore him at times but he just gets worse! i thought he was doing it for attention but he defo isnt!
