My son wont sleep on his own!!!

I cannot get my 18week old baby to sleep anywhere else but on me during the day!! As soon as he falls asleep on me (which is also the only way!) i wait a little time then put him down and wakes up immediately, sometimes quietly sometimes whinging.
Any ideas?? I have tried all sorts!!

leave him somewhere and do something else.

Get a sling?

swaddle him slightly and leave him for a bit (notice my deliberately vague 'slightly' and 'bit'..sorry)

Does he sleep ok at night. Try taking him out in the pram for a few days ( or in the car). Otherwise, you may need to get a sling ot if you want him to go in the cot, do some mild sleep training with him. PUPD?

Our dd was never the best sleeper, day or night. In the end we did controlled crying for night time which worked really well. For daytime sleeps cc didn't really work so we took her out walking in the pram or if we were really desperate we went out in the car (not the best idea with the credit crunch!!!). We also found that if we rock the pram backwards and forwards she goes to sleep and then we can leave her.
If I was to do it again from the start I would say try the cot in the day with a routine eg. sleeping bag, story etc and either sit with them till they go to sleep or leave them and see what happens.
Only problem is the cuddles are lovely aren't they and you get a rest too!!!!!

I used to put ds in the pram for his daytime sleeps and he carried on until he was 7 months in there. It also meant if we were out that he wouldn't see it as any different.

t was getting wintery by the time he was into the nap thing so I didn't want to be going out in all weathers so I'd put him in his pram and rock him gently inside til he went off, book in one hand (!) rocking with hand/foot other and then if I heard him stirring he'd get another rock.....Eventually I could just leave him in there and he knew going in there meant "sleep" - Eventually at 7/8 months he would happily go in his very dark room (Have you got blackout blinds? - they really help with daytime sleeping - velcroed to the window - get blackout material from any good curtain shop and then some sticky velcro and hey presto)..

I think swaddling is quite hard at that age - I had the miracle blanket with ds but he could wriggle out of it by 18 weeks. Does he have a sleeping bag - that might also be a good association.....

I think also that by this stage, I would leave my ds to moan a bit and he really did eventually get the message and by about 4/5 months loved his sleep particularly at lunchtime....
