DD not talking in sentences like her peers

Just been to a regular coffee morning thingy with mums with toddlers around dd's age (two last July). Feel a bit worried that they're all talking in sentences eg: mummy, will you take me on the swing?' and she's still saying: 'mummy, swing'. Will she catch up or what? She's always been behind with milestones etc and am now fretting about her being a July baby in her school year especially if she's a bit of a slow developer. Naturally DH says 'stop worrying about it, she's only two.' But I am worried, what can I do? She's a PFB btw!

i took my ds to gp for same reason when he was 2 and just got him checked out it turned out to be more than just speach delay but wasnt even putting 2 words together

she sounds ok for her age but you could just ask gp and get referral just to put your mind at ease doesnt mean it is more serious but at least they can tell you

how mny words does she say? if its about 50 then sounds ok my ds was only doing 10 words if that dont worry yourself too much as all learn at different rate but do seek advise as if id listened to all he'll be ok bioys are slow chat with my ds it would of been to late with dx

your dd sounds like she's doing ok seek advise and they'll put your mind to rest

one thing i have learnt is to never compare our dc and others all learn different things at different rayes what one knows another doesnt etc

My dd (2.6) does'nt talk at all and this was only picked up a few months ago.

i think 50 words + 2 word sentences at 2 is whats expected, then 3 word combinations by 3. I know lots of kids do more than that but it looks like your dd is within the normal range. You dont say how many words she has but I think I remember reading that a child will need to have about 50 before he/she progresses to true 2 word combinations , ie not things like "all gone" but things like "mummy swing" like your DD

ooh thank you, you three, I feel a lot better now. It's so difficult not to get competitive worried when she's not picking up words as quickly.

thank you scattercushion he is doing really good words are coming along great so big improvements it wouldnt hurt to refer dd though as SALT could help alot with setting tasks at home etc to help

Scattercushion, your dd is right on track. Even a few months makes a huge difference, in relation to the children you are comparing her against. My dd's speech started to really take off around 2.5.

thank you blueshoes. That's such a relief to hear. Today she said 'Mummy take off coat' which is a four-word sentence! Yippee! But she is still in the baby room at nursery whilst other kids her age have moved up and its so hard to stay cool when other mums comment.

Bubblagirl - what sort of tasks can you do at home? One thing I wonder about is whether I should fill in the gaps when she says short sentences eg she says 'dolly table' I say 'yes the dolly is sitting on the table'. What do you think?

ds is 2.2 and says mostly single words, a few 2 word sentences (no nappy, it's mummys, grandma's etc/bye bye/that's naughty, excuse me, this/that way) and one 3 word sentence (leave me alone). i didn't realise it was unusual.

i was told to verbalsie everything but to not make sentence too long so dolly sitting at table to try to keep to 3 word phrases as they need good understanding of actions for the words before being able to say it

mummy cooking dinner, you want blue cup?

catch the ball, mummy catch ball, just to keep sentences short and understandable

i verbalised everything and if he was unable to say then had to get him to point and then say it for him yes you want green cup

it did work as he started saying more and more as his understanding was coming along 3 mths later his completely different boy with his speech i could barely get him to say 2 words now its mummy your kirt [skirt] is so wuggly ][lovely]

pronounciations have been told not to correct but just say word back yes my skirt is lovely thank you but never to correct them

oh for your dd age you need to say as many 2 word phrases and when she catches on add an extra word so

catch ball
mummy catch
blue cup
cooking dinner
want drink
etc
juice or milk or whatever your choice
want juice
if doesnt answer get to point at what she wants oh you want ?

lots of action words
wash face
nice clean
brush teeth
catch ball
kick ball
painting picture etc
big cup
small cup

not sure what words she uses or how so just small examples of things it did work with my ds all dc are different but it wont hurt as will give more understanding to words anyway

just keep verbalising she seems to have great range of words so its just the adding one

I think it's pretty true to say that by about 5 or 6 everyone pretty much catches up with one another, unless there is a specific learning difficulty - so don't worry too much. It's a bit frustrating when other LO's are babbling away, but all kids are different. My DC1 said first proper word at 9 months, and could ask for stuff by one year, I kid you not. My DC2 is one, and not even close to making himself understood - just babbling incoherently...I'm grateful he's not PFB as am trying to be more chilled this time around. As long as there is a will to communicate, and she opens her mouth then she's on track, don't worry.

agree with bubbla. speak to nursery about why she is still in baby room.

Is her understanding and development in other areas normal for her age? I think they won't move them up to the next room until they think they are ready and will be able to do the activities that they do in that room.

For example my friend's ds is in the toddler room and they encourage them to get their own breakfast, snacks and drinks. my ds is 2.2 and can't even drink out of an open cup properly let alone pour milk and cereal into a bowl.

Different children - different styles.

my dd, a parrot and eloquent and gifted at language at two, seriously sounded like a 4 yo.

ds (2 in august) says night night mummy (stilted) and up cuddle (oop cugool) and words to that effect.

They are JUST DIFFERENT.

I agree with other posts - its important to make the sentence that little bit longer - so say when she says to you "mummy swing" you say "you want to GO ON THE swing? okay then up we go". also important when they point at something to either get them to choose by using the word eg "do you want an apple or banana?" and they have so say the word for what they want, or you say "oh, you want the PINK cup with the flowers on it?" also agree - never correct them, just say it back properly. (my DS goes to speech therapy)

I am having the same problem with my DD who is 2 next week. She tries her best to say what she wants but everything comes out as a 'Lisp' and is not clear at all. I never understand what she wants until she points or shows me by walking me to what she wants. She says the odd words but just smiles and walks off when I try and encourage her to say things. She can say about 30 words and I don't know if this normal but the Lisp thing is bugging me!!

I guess it must just be encouragement and repating of things over and over that needs to be done?? Good luck with your dd, i'm sure they'll get there in the end!

listen to your DH "stop worrying about it, she's only two." Two word sentances perfectly normal at two if you want longer sentacne repeat back her two word sentance with another word

"Look car" = "look blue car"

etc when she's got that add another word.

don;t stress.

"not clear at all" - apparentlyu pronounciation is the last thing to click. I can still only understand 80% of what my 2.9 yr old says.
