standing up in cot!

Please tell me how long this phase lasts! New trick just learnt or has just realised he can do it, my 1 yr old goes to bed and immediately stands up and crys, went up 3 tmes last night to lay him back down till he went to sleep, then in the morning same again standing up any advice?

It is just a phase, I can't remember how long it lasts, maybe a couple of weeks. Just keep laying him back down. Problem is because they can get up but not get down. I remember my DD almost having a compulsion to stand as soon as she was awake. She seemed as suprised as anyone!

Bad news is my son still tries it at almost 2.

We just take it in turns to go up every few mins, lay him down without any fuss or chat, pat his back, whisper night-night and leave. Some nights he takes 10-15 mins to settle, others he lays down straightaway and goes to sleep.

Oddly, he always goes straight to sleep at naptime.

When they've discovered they can stand, they want to practice all they can.

I went to see a sleep counsellor recently as I was having problems with my DSs. What she suggested was a form of controlled crying that I found worked really well with the standing up thing. (DS2 was about 12 months at the time).

The counsellor suggested putting them to bed and leaving the room. If the DC hadn't gone to sleep after 4 mins, to pop your head round the door and say 'lie down, it's sleep time', then to go out for another 4 mins, after another 4 mins (12 mins total), to go in and lie them back down and as you do it to say 'lie down, it's sleep time'. You repeat this pattern for as long as you need to.

I found that by telling the DC to lie down they soon learn what they need to do. DS2 got it on the 2nd day and sleeps like an angel now.

At this stage the problem isn't with learning to sleep it's with learning to stand. He hasn't grasped how to get himself down again. If I'd have left my DD she'd have just fallen over eventually and god knows banged her head or something which would have meant hours more of settling.

Personally what I did at this stage, was to settle DD on the bed and transfer her when she was asleep. Saved my back and I could lay with her which made it a more peaceful way for everyone to get to sleep.

Gingerninja - The OP hasn't told us whether her DS can get back down or not.

There are lots of variations on controlled crying - this way worked well for me. Sure, it's about learning to stand, but it's also about going to sleep and separation from the OP.

Not if this is new, which by the sounds of the post it is.

FWIW, CC is CC, regardless of how long you leave them, if you pick them up or just poke your head in the door. It is still CC. I was trying to point out that it doesn't matter what 'variation' you use, you're doing cc that's all that matters.

Its not the standing its when they learn how to swing out of the thing and how much fun "bouncing" is!

I took the sides off when dts started this. We had cot beds though.

Ooh I must be a baaaad mummy . If my DS (16 mos) stands up in his cot after I've put him to bed, unless he's really crying/obviously upset/in pain about something, I leave him to lay himself down on his own. Perhaps I'm neglectful?!

Lol fatipuffs! By that age they can lay them damn selves down again! I leave my ds if he stands up unless he's crying but he tends to just lay there now. The novelty of standing in the cot wore off after about 8 weeks and he was settling himself by 11 months, it seemed to last forever at the time though cos whenever I did try and lay him down it just got him so angry. I took the wimps way out and just fed him to sleep or laid him down and held his hand til he'd fallen asleep, then had to creep out!

we have just had it again tonight, god 8 weeks thats ages, i know i will have to resort to some cc, god i hate it not very good at it, what do people do when they wake early and get up in the cot?
