Support thread for parents of children who tantrum!!

Please can we have one. DD has just started this BIG TIME. She is 3.8. Never did it before. Could be various reasons, and today bit me very very hard three times while playing at a neighbors.

I need somewhere to off load and share ideas about what the heck to do - and not to RL friends!! Don't want to scare everyone off so NO ONE invites us round again. (After today's performance it's a risk.)

Is anyone up for it?

Polite tantrum, but a tantrum nevertheless....

DS 2 year pinching sweets from ice cream bit in pizza hut, told not to take them so face down on floor sceaming. Quickly took said child outside to finish which he soon did, but got some funny looks.

i have two of them. both dds one is 4 and the other 15 months. both v hyper, energy draining and prone to tantrums of momumental proportions!!

My ds has tantrums too, great big screechy, screamy, kicking and stomping tantrums and he's only 1 too! (Hi knickers!)

He hates it if a toy isn't doing exactly what he wants it to do , or if he can see something that he can't reach, taking something off him or moving him away from something is like the end of the world to him, not to mention being strapped into his carseat or buggy!

He seems worse now he's walking and I was so hoping he'd be less frustrated and a tad more compliant! Ahh well...

He's always been highly strung though so for us I think it's just part of his personality and something we just have to ride out. I quite like the fact that he's souch a strong minded little soul.

I am dreading the terrible twos already though as he is going to be foul if he carries on this way!

I'm a bit firey too though so it's my fault!

You may get lucky and your DC gets through them now rather than later.

DD waited until nearly four, but:

1. new little sister
2. new house
3. end to old preschool, new one starting next week.
4. long hols in hot hot US where spoiled rotten by grandparents.

She is also 'hyper' (although not in any kind of clinical sense - we think!!) and 'high energy' as another poster mentioned their child is. It's been okay when we're on our own as she can "get the mad out" in private. We just remain calm and let her work through it. But in public it's unbelievable. Hasn't done it in a store yet, but started this am at a CHILDMINDERS I was interviewing to potentially look after her and DD2 when I go back to work. Didn't want to leave threw a screaming fit. In the afternoon it was at a neighbours who had already said: the boys just get wild when she's here, they're just so crazy about seeing her more than other friends. [Oh dear, is that an indirect bad influence statement?!] She went from totally calm to wild, bit me the once. And then when it was time to go (after I told her I'd be warning her when she had ten minutes left, etc then it would be time to be off) flew into the queen of all rages and bit me twice as hard as she could. One bite has left a mark, the other on the part of my hand under the thumb, a bad bruise.

If she starts biting at school...it doesn't bear thinking about .

I didn't think they did either knikers, I thought it was more 2-3 year olds but aparently not! My ds tantrums over similar things to your dd, the sippy cup thing, if he can't do it, he screeches and throws the cup accross the room! The gas fire, I ended up putting his massive toy box in front of it on the hearth because I was so fed up with telling him no and him screaming at me and throwing his weight around!

Harriet, I hope you're right! Perhaps he'll be totally mellow by the time he's 2 (I doubt it but it's a nice dream!). My sister was the same as him as a baby though but actually did grow out of it very quickly so there is hope!

Oooo the biting sounds horrid for you. Ds does it but not out of anger, he just bites everything and he really doesn't realise it hurts! No doubt he will soon and he'll do it all the more .
