What is/was your baby doing at 14 weeks old? Is mine quite advanced?

I'll get hung drawn and quartered for saying this, but mine eats food- feeds himself with a spoon as long as I put the food on the spoon for him. His favourite food is banana, he loved it and cries when it's all gone and refuses his bottle for it sometimes. He feeds himself 'finger foods' (only very basic things at the moment).

He laughs.

He laughs at ceebeebies when the characters or presenters laugh.

When I say 'dada' he says 'ah-ah'. When I make gurgle noises he copies me. When I squeel he squeels and then laughs.

He sits up by himself.

He loves anything colourful.

He laughs his head off when anyone says 'boo'.

He sleeps 11 hours at night.

He holds his own bottle.

He wants to stand up allllllllll the time, he's very strong.

If you say 'kiss' he opens his moth for a kiss, and 'cuddle' he puts his hands either side of his neck. And if you say 'kiss baby' he opens his mouth to kiss his newborn cousin.

And loads of other stuff.

He just seems really advanced to me. Do all babies do these things by 14 and a half weeks old?

and who said breastfed babies were more intelligent, quite obviously wrong information!!![runs]

Fabeelo · 25/08/2008 17:24

Hmmm...so has a pint or several a day, plus rice and bananas and that.

Are you a family of gorillas?
That would explain people's interest, his fugliness and the odd noises he makes.

Jeepers · 25/08/2008 17:24

oh leave her be. Its lovely and exciting to see your child doing all those new things. Dont spoil it.

BabyGenius · 25/08/2008 17:24

Why are you bothered if I'm feeding my baby solids? It's not like I'm feeding yours solids. How rude to question my intelligence. My friend is feeding her 15 week old all kinds of crap including cheesy wotsits! It's not like I'd do that.

All I was trying to ask is if he's clever.

Please don't use feeding your baby too early and causing possible health problems as a way of showing off.

BabyGenius · 25/08/2008 17:26

riven- medical reflux. The GP told me to wean him early, and the HV said 12 weeks or 12lb, whichever came first. He's 15lb, but not fat, just long. I started him at about 14lb.

GP weaned her baby at about 11 weeks and she said he was fine so mine should be, too. Reflux stops when solids start usually.

has he passed his 11+?
if not, he's a dunderhead
ask him the square root of 1

WhereTheWildEelsWere · 25/08/2008 17:27

Sorry if you are feeling 'got at', but re-read your post, it does smack a little of boastfullness.

Competitive parenting is never nice, its much better to be silently smug.

youcannotbeserious · 25/08/2008 17:27

Cheesy wotsits...

Well, yes (sorry, I did think it was a joke) your DS is certainly more advanced than mine.

Mine can't stand unaided, isn't eating solid food (primarily as he's not been offered it) and doesn't go through the night.

Not sure if it's a sign of intelligence, but I'd say he's advanced.

Aitch · 25/08/2008 17:27

have you been advised to wean early because of the reflux? by someone higher up the medical evolutionary ladder than an HV? it is very young...

hercules1 · 25/08/2008 17:27

I would complain to your local health trust for the crap advice you've been given. Your hv is going against all their guidelines,

hmm. a GP. erk.

BabyGenius · 25/08/2008 17:28

I'm not competitive. I'm enjoying my son. Christ. If people think it's boastful, don't reply. I'm not fussed.

'Yes that's really advanced what a clever little man' or 'No not really, mine were doing similar things' would have been fine.

I've been advised to start weening at 16weeks. That was my HV's advice.

My MN post natal group have questioned that too...

But that was advice from HV

listen to riven... she knows whereof she speaks.

If this is true - then yes he is reaching his developmental milestone earlier than the norm and I guess that makes him a clever baby.

However you are feeding him solids way too early. Feeding a baby solids before their digestive system is ready will give him a higher risk of developing allergies and a higher risk of developing problems with his gut.

As other posters have said it is not a race so just slow down a little and stop encouraging him to stand up and walk, his little legs are not strong enough yet even if he is a genuis child!

ephrinedaily · 25/08/2008 17:31

My son can't do most of those things and he's 9 months! (I know that sentence is grammatically wrong but I can't work out why). My mum told me they used to wean at 12lb or 12 weeks 20 years ago, your HV must be very old or very old-fashioned.

BabyGenius · 25/08/2008 17:31

It's been diagnosed by a paediatrician and a consultant, he's stayed on children's ward a fair few times. He's on 4 different types of medication but not omeprazole.

The paediatrician recommended early weaning, but no less than 3 months. The consultant didn't mention it and I forgot to ask.

He's not standing up unaided, I hold his hands.

I wasn;t being bitchy babygenius. Just very dubious at if this was genuine. Which I suspect is the reason for all the other posts. It seems all a bit far fetched... however, of course all babies develop differently which is why we are told/given average ages of 'mile stones' so of course there wil be a few that do things alot earlier and a lot later....

Honestly, days like today ( bit like a sunday !) bring out some very odd people onto MN to start threads to just piss people off or wind people up.

Again, this is the reason behind ( i'd say fairly surely) the comments you are getting.

If you are genuine, then you need not worry about it all hey? you know what your little chap is able to do, you don't need to prove it to anyone

ALthoguh, honestly, you really should not be feeding him rice/banana, it is not at all good for him especially if he has reflux. He could have prescribed thickeners in his feed and medication if its bad, not rice/banana to eat. You need to slow that right down, until 4-6 months pref somewhere in between....

Fabeelo · 25/08/2008 17:33

have you tried him on skis?
