6 months old behaving in a strange way

my sweet little 6 months old dd who used to be so lively has suddenly been so quite and inactive i'm really into tears worrying about her i've seen the doctor but he says everything is fine. but my instincts says something is wrong. she's completely stopped babbling which she used to do all day. she seems to be well but i wonder whats exactly is happening. can anybody please please give me any opinion about this did anybody face this situation with their baby?

i have no experience of this, but didnt want to leave you unanswered. Hopefully someone will be along in a minute.

I would try and see another doctor for a second opinion, just to put your mind at rest.

how long has your dd been behaving differently?

perhaps you could see your hv too so you could get a second opinion? it might reassure you a bit more...

maybe she's just getting a cold or something and is a bit under the weather?

keep an eye on her and back to docs if you're still worried in a few days...

Go to another dr in your practice and write a list/diary of all the changes - it could just be a virus getting her down, but I would want a second opinion.

I was thinking this too, ask your HV. Much better than a GP for a little baby

thanks for all ur messages. i'm really really worried about her as i'm thinking about the worse i hope it doesnt be that worse. anyway i'll definitely talk to my hv and take another opinion of a dr. my hv says she might be getting a growth spurt do babies behave in this way? i'm really clueless

Keeping a diary is a good idea. Has anything happened in your life - moved house, or changes in her environment? Have you started weaning her, or changed her feeding (stopped BF for example) these things can changge their behaviour sometimes. My DS used to stop eating (still does) as soon he had a bug or was teething and he was very quiet when ill, and it used to worry me a lot.

Hi There. I would reiterate what the other posters have said and see your HV and or Dr, however, it could well be a growth spurt. My son (who is now nearly 7 months) had a period about 5 weeks ago when for about 5 days he was also very very quiet, disengaged, not much eye contact and not much response when I called out to him. I got myself into a terrible state and was extremely worried about autism etc etc, was in tears - the whole works - but the following week he was more lively than ever, laughing, babbling, back to his usual self. We had him weighed and he had put on half a kilo in a couple of weeks which for him was masses! To look at him now I can't believe that just a few weeks ago I was desperately concerned about him so hopefully this will be your experience too. Good luck.

thanks a ton whatwoulddollydo. its a gr8 relief to hear the same situation from u. i desperately hope that its the same case with my little one. i did c the dr but he asks such silly questions that what do if think might have happened to him, if i wud have known whats bothering her why wud i go to c a dr. its really stupid anyway i'm taking a 2nd opinion tomorrow my hv did c her 2day she says it might be a growth spurt. i did change her formula milk i've started to give her sma progress frm last week. so might be all this matters. but anyway i'm really worried.

Sorry to hear you're so worried, I had a slightly similar situation with DS2 who seemed quiet for a few days but then perked up and is totally fine. It might be a virus or something which is making your dd a bit subdued. If you are still concerned ask for a referral to a pediatrician.
Is she still making eye contact and responding well to you? Does she smile and look at you when you talk to her?

like wwdd - my dd at around 6mths had a quiet few days - she just wasnt eh same but then also found out that she'd put on a chunk of weight. maybe they wind down a bit to allow that to happen?

bhk3 - your gp was not really being silly.

Lots of people go to the doctor worried sick about their health or their children's health and sometimes have a real particular worry in their mind.

So by asking "what do you think might have happened?" is a way to give you a chance to say "OMG I dropped a toy on her head last week/my mother in law gave her ice cream yesterday/my cousin twice removed is autistic and I'm terrified that's it"

I think you are right to go and ask someone else as you are so worried. I hope you find your dd better tomorrow!

just wanted to add a late post to maybe reassure you a little bit and say i was the same with my DD (8mo) at around that stage. she went very quiet and distant and she also did strange screaming, staring into space and going suddenly rigid for a few days. i was worried absolutely sick and googling just made it worse - everything is a symptom of everything in babies, it seems

just as i was about to make a dr's appointment, a friend came round and when i told her my worries and told her to look, she went "yeah, she's just being a baby" and told me all the odd twitches, quirks etc her daughter has

i think the things that worry you sick as a mother really often can turn out to be nothing - with hindsight, i guess she was strengthening her muscles or something. in any case, soon after, she started sitting independently, started babbling again and was right as rain.

anyway, thinking of you, as i know how it makes you feel when you're worried like that

yes my dd seems to be better now. though she hasnt started babbling but she seems to be engaged & does make eye contact & responds when i call her. i did take a 2nd opinion & the dr checked her everything is ok so might be its a virus. she's becoming normal. i'm a bit relief now. but thanks 2 all of u who gave me such encouraging words. all ur messages did give my mind a little bit rest. thanks guys
