What do baby gums look like when a tooth is about to come through?

Hi, my DS is almost 9 months and I am still waiting for his first tooth. He has been teething for forever, drooling, gnawing etc but I noticed today that the outside part of his upper gums (ie the bit that touches the inside of his top lip) is quite swollen looking and hard. It looks like there is an outline of his teeth but I always thought that they would come in straight from underneath the gum (d'oh!).

I tried to look for photos on the net of what emerging teeth / gums look like but no joy...

So what should I be looking for???

my ds's first tooth looked like a blister so yes it does sound as though it could be his first tooth ,all my 3 kids didnt have teeth until they were 11 months

yes sounds like it to me.

often hard, sometimes a bit red or pale if tooth is very close to surface.

at top front, it will break through underneath first, but is close to surface at front, so you can see it as paler

DS's gums look like he has the start of an ulcer when he is about to cut a tooth.

he was totally gummy until about 8 1/2 months and then within about 3 weeks he cut 6 teeth (but they were long weeks )

Aha, this sounds like my ds' upper gums at the moment - he has 2 bottom teeth, 2nd lot of bottom teeth threatening to come through, and as Mamatastic describes, on his upper gums, it's like the outline of 4 (!) teeth underneath. Teething is utter hell!!
