DS 2.9yrs has suddenly become LESS independent... is this usual?

He has always been very independent, wanting to try things himself all the time even though he hasnt got a lot of patience.
Lately though, he has been wanting me to feed him again, sit on my lap instead of on his chair, be carried up the stairs instead of walking etc.
He throws a wobbly when I say no.
Is this usual at his age to have a backwards step in being independent?

Yes I think it is pretty usual. They go through independant and clingy stages, I tihnk at around 3 they get a bit clingy before then becoming more independant.
