Comfort toy - what happens if they lose them?

I stupidly let DD hold her comfort toy on the way back from nursery and she dropped it on street. Now lost.
She keeps asking for it and I keep talking about a substitute toy.
Now she's having trouble settling.
Last time I washed her comfort toy I did it when she was asleep but she woke at 4am in morning and didn't stop crying until I pulled it off teh clothes horse and gave it to her semi-wet.

Any experiences to help us get over this loss?

if i spot a lost cuddly on the street i pop it up on a fence or hedge out of the way of dogs etc.

Is there no way you can find another of the same kind? Ebay? MN?

I retraced steps and now waiting for DH to return so I can leave the house and do a triple check of the area.

Have also emailed my friend who bought it (I think she got it from an airport in Germany!) to ask her whether she knows how I can get a replacement as I have never seen the same toy anywhere before.

Don;t even know what it;s called:
It's got a bears head with a rattle inside, and it's 'body' is basically a velvety blanket in red white and blue

How old is DD? Can she understand concepts yet?

We told DS that his bunny had gone on holiday to see its grannie (he understands holidays and grannies, as we have both) and he accepted that after a day or two of being unsettled.

She's 13 months so doesn't understand concepts. I'm just hoping that if I distract her with another toy pretending the original comfort toy never existed, she might forget and adopt a new comfort toy.

Anyway, she's stopped singing to herself so fingers crossed she's asleep now. Hope I don't get a 4am wake-up call again!

Moral of this story - buy at least two. Hard though when it is a gift.

Sounds like a 'blankie' to me. We inherited something equivalent, from some friends who are Germans. It's in shades of orange/yellow (nice), made of velour stuff, in a triangle with a head at one corner. OUrs reminds me of luminous ghost! If you can't find one the same as the lost one, Mothercare do an equivalent kind of thing - the one we have is a velour square with Humphrey (elephant) clutching one corner. Their current version is this www.mothercare.com/gp/product/B000ZNOSZU - I assume it's velvety too. Obviously it's not the same as the lost one, but it might make a substitute.

Bit of an aside, but have you tried looking at ebay and the prices things like that go for? Makes you realise how much desperate parents are prepared to pay to replace things that bring peace/sleep/smiles!

I spent a rather shocking £17.00 on a pair of waterproof trousers for ds, and then promptly lost them when they fell off the back of my bike when I dropped him at nursery.

Someone had picked them up and put them on railings.

sounds very similar to my dds noo noo - we got it in France and looking at the label the manufacturer is Nou-nours - was looking on the net only this week for a 'back-up' just in case of situations like yours - and they are available - on Amazon i think. try it anyway - it might just be the same as ours (and much loved it is too)

Thanks for the Mothercare link Arriety . NOt sure if it will quite do it for DD becasue it's such a pale colour and reason why I think DD liked her comfort toy was that it was bright red and blue (very differnet to her other cuddlies). But it gave me the idea to do a google image search.

Any idea what the German words are for Bear Rattle Blanket? (Will start new thread to find out but posting here just in case).

Desiderata fingers crossed it will turn up. DH is on way home now so I still have some daylight when I go out searching.

Just make a big fuss of getting her something totally different but equally cuddly.

she will attach to something else, is she is thumbsuckers?
Is there something that is in her cot like a small blanket with a silky label?

My friend who bought the toy has unbelievable managed to track down the shop in Munich airport for me, so I'll give them a call tomorrow.
Phew!

In the meantime, will get her attached to another toy which was bought for her from Mamas and Papas (which I can easily replace if necessary).

If they have it, buy TWO!

Just instructed a friend of mine, who is going to berlin this saturday to buy two.
And a loveley MNetter, Emkana, who responded to my other thread has even posted a link giving the address of the shop in Berlin after telling me the shop was a chain!

Hate to be negative Nixz but....my dd had a facecloth from when she was about 6mnths old.
She named it her Goo Goo (??) and we had about 4 of them.
1 month ago, she lost her last little bit of the last cloth (she is 7.5!) - awful, nightmare, insomnia, moods, manflu (ok, mayne not tha bad!) but he thng is, its not about what the toy looks like, its about the smell, the way they have touched it so certain areas are hard/soft/smelly the wear and tear of certain parts of it.....

I wish you all the luck in the world - if she is only young though, maybe its a good thing as in my experience, they never ever wanna let their Goo Goo's go!

I have just put a bid in on ebay for a replica of dd's comforter (which she calls wee wee wun for some reason )...really hope I get it - we had a vomiting incident the other night and she wouldn't go to sleep without it ...
