Toys for 17 month old

My dd has just turned 17 months and seems to have outgrown her baby toys now. Need to get her some new ones and wondered if anybody has any recommendations on good toys to buy for this age.

DD is now 20 months but like yours a few months ago she seemed to need a change. She got into playing with water (sitting her by the sink, or bowl of water and plastic cups etc), crayons, she has a buggy and a couple of dolls and more recently a kitchen which she loves.

puzzles? they do ones in elc that have 2 big pieces per puzzle for starting out.
My DS likes cars and a road mat, drives them round the roads for ages and a train track with trains, but maybe thats a boy thing?

Hi Bobby my DD is also 17 months she loves her tea set from the ELC, and a dolly's buggy.

My DD (18mths) loves her little jigsaw puzzles, her sing & learn piano (fisher price), anything in fact with music attached, and still loves her toddle truck (treats it like a pram and loads it with dolls/teddies etc). She quite likes the aquadraw, but tends to bit the nib of the pens rather than drawing on the mat...!

My DD enjoys:

Plastic 'kids' jewellery - necklaces & bracelets

Dressing teddies with hats & scarves

Pushing a dolls pushchair

Dancing & singing

'Reading' children's toys catelogues

dd is just 19 months, and the past few weeks has been playing (non-stop) with her big sister's small dolls, and dolls house. Happyland stuff is a hit (though being a second child, dd2 prefers Polly Pocket ) and so is My Little Pony and assorted second hand houses/shops/castles.

The other big hit is the play kitchen - she has played with it for months, and still does, every day.

We also have an easel, and dd2 will stand and scribble for ten minutes at a time. But then again, she's seen her sister do it - dd1 wasn't interested in drawing till she was about 3!

Oh, and toy phones.

the early learning houses/farm/village stuff is really good - i think its the happyland stuff elibean mentioned, they dont grow out of this too quickly

Ooh good idea about the car mat thing, think ds (20months) would love that, he's still a bit cack handed for a train set, and I can't stand the arguing over thomas stuff lol.

Mine LOVES being given some uncooked pasta and several mixing bowls and a spoon, and just playing with it. Choose bits that are not too small as annoying to clear up. He also loves play kitchen as then 'cooks' for his animals.

Is there a gender divide or do kids chose toys?Just wondered as a lot of girls seem to be playing with dolls etc. Can I ask if its what they pick or what is bought for them? I have a DS of the same age (16 months) he plays with trucks and dolls and walking round a shop he will more than happily pick up a doll and I am thinking of getting him a pushchair to put his dolls in, as well as a mat to play with his cars on.

on a non hijacking different note, I let my son pick his toys, he seems to have the sense to know what he is ready for, shape sorters and elc puzzles are always good, so is a wooden spoon and a tissue box! Kitchen utensils (non sharp) of course are great right now as he mimicks everything I do and likes to "cook". Dont go mad and buy loads, you probably already own what they want to play with!

My DS is 17 months, he loves building bricks and his shape sorter. Plus any kind of car/train/truck/digger toy.
He is just starting to get into puzzles too.

You could always let her loose in the ELC and see what she picks up first, letting her choose?

nelix, my DS has just turned 2 and we bought him a little blue buggy from ELC as he loved to push his sister's pink buggy and there were arguments!

He really likes it - sometimes he pushes a doll around in it and sometimes his big plastic tiger!

nelix, I think a lot of it is parental prejudice. I am super feminist but still haven't bought DS a proper doll, which I probably would have for a girl. though he does have loads of animals. grandparents etc get him cars and his girl cousin dolls, and just expect him to be into cars and trains. even at the nursery and playgroup they encourage the kids more towards traditional gender roles, it's a bit sad really. (off to buy him a teaset tomorrow after reading this!)

nelix, I think its a bit of both. dd2 has access to loads of girly stuff as she has a big sister who's at that pink/glittery/dolly stage

But OTOH, if I offer her a truck, a train and a doll, she'll go for the doll every time. I do have 'boy toys' in our female dominated house, but they get briefly played with then dumped
