11 mo on the quieter side…

Am I worrying too much?
My almost 11mo is a quiet baby. She didn’t babble at all until the day before she turned 9 months and although there has been some progress I feel it’s slow and I am constantly comparing her to other babies of a similar age.

She can say ‘DA’ very distinctively when you ask her to say Dada or Mama and she knows who you mean when you ask her ‘where’s mama/dada’ and will repeat ‘DA’ but she doesn’t say much else. If I make a ‘ya-ya-ya’ sound she will repeat that back to me but she very rarely squeals or shrieks, she smiles a lot but doesn’t belly laugh. She can say ‘baba’ sometimes…but overall her sounds are quiet and she can happily say nothing unless I actively encourage.

For some contract, we read, sing, have good eye contact mostly. She can copy play I have modelled like putting balls in holes, tries to stack blocks copying me etc. She enjoys peek a boo and can clap at the right part at things like wind the bobbin up and will also pass me things if I say ‘mummy have’
She can clap and wave when you ask and will also rest her head if you ask for a cuddle. She responds to her name 70-80% of the time but she’s concentrating on something though she will not look at all so this is also worrying me. I am worried I could be doing more. I have a NT 5yo too who was early with all milestones so the constant comparison is hard.

I guess my concern is that her speech at this age should be further along, even her sounds or her volume. Anyone else have a quieter baby similar to this that found their voice in time? Is there anything else I can be doing for her? I have suffered PPA since birth and I find it hard to differentiate my PPA worries with valid worries.

Hi @Girlmum0609, I’d do the 9 month progress checker from Speech & Language UK. If it says she needs support you can ask your HV for a referral for a hearing test and to SaLT although she may not refer to SaLT yet.

Speech & Language UK have another progress checker for when she reaches 12 months so that you can compare the two Smile
