When should they be able to fasten their own shoelaces.

Does anyone know the approximate age that children should be able to fasten their own shoelaces.

Also, can anyone tell me approximately how long it takes to get results etc for a dyslexia test for children?

i get laughed at for the way in which i tie my shoelaces. My aunt taught me when i was little to make two loops then knot them. My aunty & i are the only people i know who do it like that! So i shall not be teaching my dd's for fear they get picked on they'll have to find some other mug to teach them!

DS1's teacher this year is encouraging all the children to learn to tie their laces, and this seems an achievable target. They are yr3 - ages 7-8. In September most of them had not yet learned to do it.

I'm sure we could all tie laces at 5 or 6 at the latest. But there was no velcro then so we had no choice but to learn!

I remember, aged about 5, my mum sitting me on the kitchen counter and teaching me to tie my shoelaces. The following day (I assume it was) in assembly at school, I proudly told my frined that I could do my shoelaces, undid them to demonstrate - and couldn't do them up again! Oh how I desperately tried and tried, but to no success. I was terrified: what would happen when assembly ended?

Unfortunately, I don't rmemeber what happened next, but it can't have been bad - the teachers must have been used to that sort of thing .

Oh, and I did learn to tie them at some point that year.

msann, dh has just taught dd (6) to tie her laces that way. I've tried to teach her the usual way but she finds it difficult and wants to do it daddy's way.

7 - I had visions of ds going to work in velcro shoes, but he finally got the hang of it this year, thank goodness!

ds1 (11) can do his laces (of course) and has been able to since about yr 3/4 but ds2 (9) has never had to do laces and only today when we bought him some new walking boots for a school trip where he will be away for 2 nights () did he realise that yes he will actually have to learn! I do think though that children find it easier to do when they are a little bit older and their fine motor skills are more advanced.

Personally, I seem to remember those lace up board shoes at school and I think I learnt on one of these at about 5/6 yrs old. As before, no velcro shoes then!

My dd is 6, and is in a ballet class of mostly 7 year olds. A few of them can tie their own laces but the teacher has to tie them for most of the class. A couple of mothers (like me) have threaded the shoes with thin elastic instead, which is a complete cop-out but dd tried and tried and just couldn't manage. I'm going to leave it another 6 months and try again.

You can buy a plastic shoe shaped board thing from ELC to practise on. Costs £1.50 I think.
Having thought it was a great idea for something to learn while on holiday - I then thought - why not practise using a REAL shoe???

To answer, my DD has just learnt to tie her shoelaces, aged 5, she also uses the "make 2 loops and tie them" method but I think she picked that up from a school friend (not me or DH). I did teach her how to do double knots though - then they don't keep coming undone.

DH does the two loops and tie together too. Hes left handed and had great difficulty learning cos was trying to do it back-to-front as it were. Dss is 13 and dh showed him how to do it but he still has great difficulty (has poor fine motor skills). I learned quite early (about 5 I think) but was always quite good with my hands and did lots of crafts at school (knitting sewing crochet etc) which helped too.

msann - that's how I tie my shoelaces too! And everyone laughs at me. But I can't do it any other way. My Mum taught me as that's how her Dad taught her.

my dad taught me with some strange tale about a rabbit running round a tree snd the going down the rrabbit hole. i've often wondered if he'd smoked something not fitting for a headteacher before he came out with that little gem.

Msann - my sister does hers like that, but for some reason I don't...maybe mum taught one and dad the other??? Bunny ears is cool though!

I remember something to do with rabbits and trees too... but I thought that was for school ties, and not shoe laces... maybe there are lots of ways rabbits can run round trees!

6 or 7 in my experience.

DD1 ties hers (2yrs 11 mths) by the two hoops and tie them method, then double knots it. But then she ties anything of any length with enough pliability. I spend half the day untying the curtain ties, my laces, DH's laces, her noodles at tea time .
She has shown an interest in knots and bows since very young though so has had lots of practice!

MY son is 5 and can't do it properly. I'm not worried.
