Milestone anxiety

Hi everyone.

I am a mom of an 8 week old baby girl. She was born at 38 weeks. My baby has been growing up beautifully but the only thing that worries me is she hasn’t socially smiled much at all. We have seen her smiling here and there sometimes , but I am not even sure that those were real smiles or not.

She makes good eye contact while we speak to her and smirk a little sometimes, but i am still not sure.

She also doesn’t coo right now. We get oooohh and aaaahh at times but don’t really know if it’s cooing in the sense she wants to communicate or just because she wants to be held in arms or has gas or something like this.

Does anyone have had similar experiences?

Nothing you’re saying screams out that there is a problem to me. You could always fill out the 2 month Ages & Stages but remember that covers in age up to 2 months and 30 days.

Its also normal for babies to score in the grey in one or two areas, not to score white in every area.

If you do the assessment and you’re still worried then I’d have a word with your HV

Baby is fine. My son smiled at 6 weeks but maybe once a day if that. Eye contact was also too stimulating for him, he would do it once or twice a day for 2 seconds and look away. I was really worried. We didn’t get full on eye contact and smiles til 12 weeks on the dot it was really hit and miss before that. I think 3 months old is when they become more interactive.

Baby is 7 months and no concerns now. Eye contact and smiles all day long.

Stop worrying, but if you can’t its fine your worries will disappear in another month or so when she becomes more interactive.
