Baldy children

DS is 3 in August. He has had one haircut to date, just to take the very tips of his hair off his ears. It is SLOW growing and fairly thin. It rarely gets washed as baths are a huge trauma for him and hair washing just sends him into a frenzy of not wanting to be bathed ever again. Besides he has very little to wash.

DD is 16 months and has little more than a 'baby' covering. Again hers is slow growing and I can't see any change in months. Hers is washed with bath water a lot, but shampoo breaks her eczema out so it's avoided.

Both have slight cradle cap.

Slightly daft question, is it ok that they have such slow growing hair? Is it a concern at all meaning they're missing something in their diet or something? I feel so daft for asking... but it niggles me now and then!

are they blonde? i think its something to do with hair colour! both my dds were born with loads of hair but my nan says that her dd2 was bald untill she was 3 and she thinks it was because she was blonde!

i was with a 14 month blonde little girl and she didnt have much hair

micci25 · 25/06/2008 23:02

oh sorry my dd2 is very dark my dd1 is blonde now but was v v dark when she was born

suzi2 · 25/06/2008 23:03

yes, they're both fair haired (well, as far as we can tell so far with dd!). My mum tells me that my first haircut, a very short bob, was at age 4. And DH was fair as a child but from photos he seems to have had plenty hair.

But they get a lot of comments so I thought I should do my parenty duty and ask on here

ds' hair is very slow to grow too. a recent pic of him is the one in a red coat on a trike thingy and he is 21/22 months there. he was about 10/11 months on the one of him sat on a blue chair on the train so as you can see it hasn't grown much in a year at all.

bobblehat · 25/06/2008 23:06

Both of my ds's were baldies too. Ds2 is 3.5 and still only has very thin baby hair. He looks daft when he goes off to nursery in his uniform. He's also fairly small for his age, so people think he is a lot younger than he really is, which means he can get away with more!

Ds1 was exactly the same. However he is now 6.5 and has the thickest hair you've ever come across.

As long as they're eating a variety of stuff I wouldn't worry too much. Maybe a trip to the GP might ease your concerns though?

suzi2 · 25/06/2008 23:07

nappyaddict, DS has about what your DS has in the photos of him sitting with his tongue out. I estimate that it's grown maybe an inch in a year at most?

I have a baldy baby - he's 16m. My other two had both had a few haircuts by this age so I don't know why DS3's hair is slow t grow.

If it helps, my nephew didn't have much hair until he was about 3. He's 19 now and has tons so I would try not to worry about it if I were you

suzi2 · 25/06/2008 23:09

Thanks bobblehat. Both of mine are quite petitie so people think they're a lot younger. DS has recently seen the dietician due to insufficient calcium and she never mentioned anything else. His diet is crap really but she read the food diary and never flagged anything else up. We're seeing her in Sept again so might ask then...

I long to buy DD clasps might be a while yet!

nappyaddict · 25/06/2008 23:10

he was 18/19 months in that photo with his tongue out.

nappyaddict · 25/06/2008 23:11

people always think ds is younger too. think he has a baby face cos it's not like he's short for his age. he's about average i think.

bobblehat · 25/06/2008 23:12

When ds1 was about 3 he took to wearing a pink hair slide (from a cracker - class!) in his few wisps!!!

suzi2 · 25/06/2008 23:14

never thought I could maybe sneak a clasp into a wisp of DSs. He maybe has about enough...

ds was born with some hair, it dropped out and didn't grow again until he was 2. dd seems to be going the same way. teeth slow growing as well. ds/dd both blonde, bordering on strawberry blonde. ds is nearly 5, had his hair cut a few months ago and hairdresser said he had a high hairline at the back. Had a look recently and there's new growth there and some at front as well, so it's been a long process! I was the same, didn't have hair until 2 years.

seeker · 25/06/2008 23:34

My dd was bald for ages. She got it into her head that she needed plaits to start school - and she JUST had enough for me to do one turn of plait on each side - at nearly 5! I was so relieved - I thought I wasn't going to be able to do it.

She is 12 now and has thick, shiny beautiful red hair well past her bottom - so don't worry - it will grow!

JaceyBee · 26/06/2008 11:04

My dd (16 months) was totally bald for ages and now only has long hair on the back of her head and hardly any on the top, she has a proper mullet and looks like billy ray cyrus

savoycabbage · 26/06/2008 11:13

My oldest is 4 and a half and going to school in September and has only had her hair cut once as it has hardly grown at all. It's about three inches long now. I keep thinking it will grow soon but it just hasn't. At one time she insisted on wearing a ribbon hanging down at the front of her hair and she pretended that it was her hair!

DrNortherner · 26/06/2008 11:16

My ds was a baldy, he is 6 now and it is only just thickening out.

I was a baldy too, had ahrdly any hair till I was 3 years old. Now I have lucious thick locks that everyone comments on.

meep · 26/06/2008 11:17

not sure what age I was - but could obviously string a sentence togther because I said to a well meaning old lady "me not a boy, me a girl" after being mistaken for a boy due to lack of hair!

Dd still has very little hair at nearly one and I reckon it will be a very long time before I get my "first curl" for those baby box thingies you get given when they are born !

nappyaddict · 26/06/2008 12:05

ds only started getting hair on the top of his head the last few months too.

Riponite · 26/06/2008 12:25

Friend of mine from the States used to glue bows to her daughters' heads with flour and water paste! When asked how they stayed there she would say 'with a straight pin' with a straight face, some people apparently believed her and made 'dangerous lunatic' faces, sounds fun

Minkus · 27/06/2008 10:31

DS is 3 yrs 8 months and has only needed his hair cut twice, apparently dh was the same and they are both blonde too (didn't realise there was a link with hair colour- mn is so useful!)

DH is a baldy grown up too though! He feels sorry for ds, says "poor little bugger, he's only going to have hair until he's about 18 and then it'll start falling out again"
