Hyperlexia and speech delay outside of ASD

My son is 28 months and has speech delay - suspected CAS and/or phonological delay. He is in speech therapy and there are no signs of ASD according to them. He does however have what we think is hyperlexia.

-He can identify and say all his letters (not alphabet song or rhyme, he can say them in order and also randomly and knows the sound of any letter you show him)

  • Can spell (as in he looks at a word and spell each letter of the word out)
  • if we say 'a is for' etc he comes up with random words, this is for about half the alphabet (not a rhyme or pattern he knows he chooses the words)
  • he can identify letters even just from the outline of them on a letter matching board

Obviously it looks like hyperlexia, but as there are no signs for ASD so far, heard about hyperlexia 3 etc and if anyone has experience of that + speech delay would appreciate.

My first had hyperlexia and has never been tested for ASD but I do suspect that they have it as DC2 is diagnosed.

I’ve not heard of hyperlexia being present without ASD but I’m just some random on the internet Smile

Could it be that your DS is high functioning? And I would t put too much store in what the SaLT says. My DC1 with hyperlexia has ADHD and DC2 has AuDHD. In fact I was told repeatedly by SaLT, preschool, and all through school that they could see no signs of ND. I think this is because they are sociable, bright and compliant.
