Please help - at work but DH phoned in tears re.DS

DS has just turned 1 and is teething at the moment. He's got 8 teeth already (4 top and 4 bottom) but I think he must be cutting some of the bigger ones, although we can't see anything.
DH is off today and has phoned me in tears from home as DS is refusing to sleep although he had a really bad night, won't be picked up and is generally being a nightmare. DH is really tired because of getting up in the night and just having worked 3 12-hour shifts at work, and is basically at the end of his tether.
DS has had some Calpol and Anbesol but won't stop rubbing his ears and whinging.
I'm guessing there's not much we can do but I feel so helpless here at work so any suggestions?

A walk if it's not already been tried?

if all else fails, stick baby in pushchair and get out of the house (and he may well fall asleep)

Calpol takes about 20 minutes.

Ear rubbing - could it be summat else like an ear infection?

Pram - walk - fresh air.

take him to the doc and get his ears checked for an infection .. rubbing ears is a sign

otherwise give him nurofen, something cold and hard to chew on

In the pram or car and a walk/drive around? Sounds like earache.

Are you sure it's teeth? Ear infection?

Can he get him to a GP to rule out an ear infection? My ds sometimes got them when teething, and he would be very fretful and unsettled with them.

Can your DH take him out in the car or a buggy where hopefully the motion will lull him to sleep?

medised? take him out for a walk to the shop? dummy? something cold to chew on?

What about those rubber rings you put in the fridge or freezer?

Would give DS something to mouth and stop him rubbing his ears?

Do you have a friend who could pop round to give DH a break? Or could you take off from work early?

Sounds like your DH needs a bit of TLC...

if you have a tumble drier turn it on and leave baby next to it, works in 10 mins usually.
Ditto vacuum cleaner...it's the white noise apparently.

However, if it is ear infection, best to go to doctors especially as it is friday

I would suggest they go out for a distraction - park/beach/woods/round the estate - for DH more than anything.

Four walls can feel a bit when the baby is inconsolable.

Fresh air might help DS to fall asleep.

Rubbing/pulling at ear is also a sign of being tired though - it was with my son. Not much help I know.

I also find using Calpol and then Nurofen 2 hours later gives a more constant pain relief.

Can't believe I didn't suggest this before.......Astons and parsons teething powders, it's fab! Tell your dh to go to a chemist and stock up because if he's like this today its probably going to be a long night too.

GP before the weekend. Ear rubbing and refusing to lie down are classic signs of ear infection.

• ear infection. DS1 suffered a lot of these as a baby (and still does now) and ear rubbing is a classic sign. Did not want to sleep as every time he put his head down it thudded.

I remember DH once sleeping bold upright holding DS (who was about 6 months at the time) because he could not lay down.

Thanks everyone. DH has already taken him out in the car 3 times and he's not gone to sleep.
Think I will see if the GP can see him this afternoon just to rule out an ear infection as I don't want him to be like this over the weekend poor little mite .

Defo visit to the GP needed re ear infection.

I'm sure they'll fit an appointment in for him - they usually do for babies
