Ok, so I am a bit worried about ds2. He does odd things.

He is just a year old. Always been a really 'good' baby...no trouble, no fuss sort of chap.
I've posted several months ago about being concerned in case it isn't normal to be this quiet etc, but not really had any cause to think otherwise...but yesterday, when we were at ds1's school, he crawled over to the other side of the passageway where we were waiting on some seats, stood up, leaneing on the wall, with his little head bowed down, and just stood there.

It was so odd - he didn't answer me or the teacher who started to talk to him - he just stood completely still facing the wall.

I went and picked him up after a minute, he was fine..

Anyway I forgot it, and then he did it again this morning. We were in the Letting agents and he just went and stood by a chair, hung his tiny head and stood really still. Everyone on the office was talking to him, saying 'aw, he's shy' but it didn't seem like shy - he didn't keep looking up or anything, just was staring at the floor. he looked kind of despairing

I just wondered if anyone else's child does this, should I be worried, could it be he is having 'absences' or something?

He does seem really happy otherwise.

I don't want to ignore your post but I have no expert advice - sounds to me worth asking the GP to make sure he is OK.

I am wondering about things like autism, maybe - though he seems very ready to connect with me, makes eye contact, always wants a cuddle. So maybe not Autistic.

Have you had his hearing checked? Can he hear you?

Haven;t had it checked, but I believe he can hear well, he sings along to his little cot thingy, ...he often sings, well it is like a long vowel sound...often when he is falling asleep.

He missed his 8mo check, never had a hearing test sine he was about 3 days old. It was fine that time though.

He hasn't any words yet. Is this normal? I can't remember. He sometimes says 'Ma - ma' sort of by accident - not really meaning anything. He makes funny little consonant sounds but I don't think they have progresse dmuch since a few months ago.

Sorry whitecat, x posted - I haven't an HV at the mo, but might go to clinic and see them about it. My elder one never did this so is a bit new to me.

1yr is quite early for much talking.
Is he leaning against things or just hanging his head? If he's leaning on things, he might just like the sensation of his forehead against a cool wall, especially in warmer weather.

Go and see your HV and say you missed his 8 month check and she/he will check him out.

The only reason I ask is that I was (saddo) watching home movies of DD as a baby and she was deaf and we did not know. You hear me going on and on 'cooey, oy, over here' type things and she did not respond.

I think a visit to te HV or GP should put your mind at rest though.

Clanger, he doesn't rest his head - just props self up with arms, on chair or wall or whatever, head is just drooped but not touching wall etc.

I honestly don't think you need to worry so much.
You could get his hearing checked if you feel you need to.Myds2 is 14months and dosen't speak...he babbles.He is not at all good with strangers and has to meet people lots before he smiles at them.He stiffens and clutches me when we go into new situations and won't even go in my friends kitchenAnd,he isn't walking yet!He likes cuddles etc.
This sounds worse written down...but i am not worried.
What i am trying to say is that maybe your ds just takes himself off to wait,and i have to say it sounds terribly sweet.

If you're worried, ask the GP or health visitor. But it could easily be nothing, you know. It seems like he was in an unfamiliar situation both times, so could have just been taking in the atmosphere.

And he could have just learned a new thing to do and feel a new sensation (like a pulling on the back of his neck, maybe) so he's trying it out.

I have had moments of worry about odd things my DS did - one of my 'favourites' was licking his finger then touching each side of his face twice. Nursery were 'concerned' and I had him down for OCD and all sorts, but he stopped after a few weeks - just a weird habit he picked up.

Of course, check it out. But as a worrier myself I thought it might help to consider some of the non-worrying possibilities too!

I think I'll try and see if he can be assessed wrt hearing at least. Though he does call out to me, if I am in another room etc. and he seems Ok on the RNID checklist.

Sorry for the confusion there. At infant school, we had a "naughty wall" which we stood facing for punishment, and it was far more bearable to lean against it with your forehead in hot weather.
A trip to the doctor/HV might put your mind at rest. Children do sometimes develop odd little behaviours, but it's worth checking.

I have to say I wouldn't think of that as particularly odd behaviour for a young toddler - they do do the most bizarre stuff and being in their own world is all part of that. He may just have liked the feeling that stretching up against the wall gave him. My ds2, who was v late to talk (he is finally calling me Mummy as of last week and he will be 3 in August) but a good communicator otherwise, used to do all sorts of funny things - he went through a phase of sitting totally still with a bucket over his head for 4 or 5 minutes at a time, and he can still be off with the fairies when a strange person speaks to him. Get it checked out with your hv when you next see her, but I really wouldn't worry at this stage.

My DS3 is 10 months old and he is very very quiet. I think your DS sounds perfectly normal. TBH I think you would know if he couldn't hear!

My DD goes and stands somewhere when she wees. She goes still and gets a bit of a glazed look. It is making potty training for wees a bit hard

If you are concerned then see a gp/hv. He doesn't sound particularly odd to me.
Young children do do things that we as adults would find bizarre e.g. My dd1 (now 5) spent an entire week in her dressing up box when she was 2, she only came out for meals/nappy changes.
It could just be his way of coping with loud or confusing situations. Neither of my dd's would talk to strangers at a young age and the more someone tried to interact with them the worse it got.

Yes, he could be weeing...usually when he does a poo, he goes very red though and grunts a bit...

The wee might be the answer.. though when he does this he often will sort of tremble afterwards? Like a little shudder.

Have spoken to HV who said she'll some and see him after we move. She actually rang me, because of his trip to A&E the other day (stairs) so that was useful!

Sounds as if it could be very normal to me, and the wee thing sounds quite likely.

DS1 is severely autistic. He was regressing around a year so it's hard to know exactly what was autism- but I would say at a year the only sign really was that he had to be taught everything hand over hand - so he didn't learn by watching (imitation). I remember teaching him to drink out of a cup hand over hand when he was shortly over a year - I didn't realise until I had ds2 that most babies don't need to be taught they just do. Other things looking back he used to read books upside down a lot and just kill himself laughing (I thought that was very clever!) and he used to be able to sing perfectly in tune. And he would sing rather than talk. So if he saw a star he stopped saying 'dar' and would sing twinkle twinkle instead.

No clear actual classic autism signs until 18 months though when he wasn't pointing.
