angry 8 year old

my 8 year old son is absolutely lovely, most of the time. we had parents evening yesterday and his teacher says his behaviour is impeccable. he's very happy at school.

recently he's been having anger outbursts.

there's no point in trying to reason with him when he's having an outburst as it simply doesn't work, and there would be no way of getting him to school if it escalated. so I wait for things to calm and try and determine the cause.

this morning he kicked and shouted, and swore at me twice. he knows how much this upsets me. we diffused the situation. but I haven't yet spoken to him about consequences. does anyone have any advice on what is a reasonable consequence?

my daughter is 11 and rightly points out that she has consequences for far less. the difference is that she knows how to manage her emotions.
