When and how did your toddler’s language ‘explode’?! 🗣️💬

DS has a couple of words that he uses consistently and one or two words that are more sporadic.

He has just gone through a huge burst in his gross motor skills which has been great to see, so I’m hopeful of a similar burst in expressive language now too. I wondered if anyone could share what this looked like for their toddler in terms of how many words they started using and when?

His receptive language is great and I don’t have any social interaction concerns. I would just like him to chatter a bit more!

I actually wrote down all of my sons words and his age:

By 13 months - 12 words
By 14 months - 19 words
By 15 months - 28 words
By 16 months - 39 words
By 17 months - 65 words
By 18 months - Over 100 words

I'd say the explosion happened between 16-18 months regarding singular words. Not long after he had a few stock phrases but really started linking words and using sentences as he approached 2. I hope this is helpful.

Wow! That seems like so many words compared to DS! It’s really useful to see the growth, thank you.

How old is he @Hablo? I think that this progress checker from Speech & Language UK is a good way to tell if they’re on track Smile

My son only has around 12 approximations of words at 25 months. His progress has been steady over the past few months but still waiting for the "explosion".
